Does this course exist??

Hii, I was looking at the course pages on SOAS university and found that on the BA Japanese combined page there was an option to study combined BA Japanese and Korean. I've spoken to SOAS staff and have been told that the course doesn't exist by one person but have been told it does exist by another so I'm really confused. Can any SOAS staff tell me if it actually exists or not?
I would contact the department directly to ask about this, as they will have the most accurate information. Non-departmental staff (e.g. general admissions staff rather than department admissions tutors) will not know the details of the internal department changes, and the SOAS website is basically useless as a source of information (as lecturers told me, in slightly more diplomatic terms, when I was there even before they "updated" it to the current version which is even less functional) as it's often out of date or even outright incorrect.

I believe generally even before it was very unusual to be able to do a combined course between two East Asian languages due to the intensive scheduling of the first year language modules. However I believe it's possible to pick up some elective modules in one of the other East Asian languages during the course (albeit probably not first year).

There's also the language centre which offers evening and summer courses, although these are paid for SOAS students get a discount as I understand

They did this to me with Korean and Chinese. Double language degrees do not exist at SOAS. I dont know why they list things on the website that are misleading.

Above post is right, you can pick up some others when you have a certain level / in 2nd year.

Places that do double asian languages are Uni of Leeds and UCLAN. There probably is more but those were two I have considered.

Hi there,

Yes, I can confirm that here at the University of Central Lancashire we have a BA (Hons) Modern Languages programme which offers students the option to study two languages with equal weighting. Japanese, Chinese and Korean along with British Sign Language are the options students can choose from. You can learn more about this 3 year programme including modules and entry requirements here.

It's great to hear that you are considering us as one of your options, do let me know if you have any questions at all and I'd be happy to help.

Best wishes, 😊
Sarah

Hi,

Unfortunately, BA Japanese and Korean is not a programme we offer at SOAS. You can combine BA Japanese or Korean with other courses if you are interested. I will link both the web pages below so you can see all the combinations available:

Another potential option would be to study BA East Asian Studies where you would be able to study modules in both Japanese and Korean over the course of your degree. However, this course is not as language-heavy in comparison to studying just BA Japanese or BA Korean.

I hope this helps 🙂

Apparently they used to offer Japanese and Korean (I think before covid) but its no longer an option.
