Freshers Week: The Ultimate Guide for New Students

Hey Guys😀! The countdown is officially on it's 21 days until Freshers Week🎉 kicks off, and as a third-year student at De Montfort University (DMU), I can confidently say that I'm a Freshers expert by now. Having experienced two amazing Freshers Weeks, I’ve gathered a treasure trove of do's and don'ts that will help you make the most of this exciting time. So here is my guide for what could potentially be one of the best weeks of your Uni life!

What is Freshers Week All About?
Freshers Week is essentially the ultimate welcome party for all new students. It’s a week-long extravaganza filled with events, activities, and opportunities designed to help you settle into university life. It’s your chance to meet new people, socialize, and get to know the campus before classes start. Trust me, attending Freshers Week is super important because you’ll discover all the clubs, societies, and sports teams available, as well as volunteer opportunities. This is where I found and applied for my on-campus part-time job, which I've happily held for the past two years! And also it's great to help you get to know the city you'll be living in.

If You’re a Student at DMU, Here’s What to Look Forward To:
Welcome Festival🎊 (21st September - 6th October)
The Welcome fest on the 21st is hands down one of my favorite events, especially as a returning student. The vibe is unmatched with good music, amazing food, and a variety of stalls offering everything from cool merch to essential student services. And who doesn’t love free stuff? Make sure you take advantage of all the goodies available.
Free Events
DMU goes all out with free events during Freshers Week. Highlights include the open-air cinema, where you can chill under the stars with new friends and watch a movie, and the Mamma Mia experience is a must for all ABBA fans!
Day Trips 🚌
These trips are super affordable and an awesome way to explore other cities. Last year, I went on a day trip to London with friends, and it was a 10/10 experience. If you can, definitely sign up for at least one day trip—they're worth every penny.
Nightlife 🥂
Okay, so nightlife isn’t really my thing (I didn’t go to any parties last year), but if that’s your scene, you’re in for a treat. There’s always a Bar Tour, a Welcome Party, and loads of other events happening every night. Pro tip: Get a wristband to access all the events you want to attend instead of paying for each one individually. It’s a much better deal.

A Few Do’s and Don’ts
Do:
Go to as many events as possible, even if you’re nervous. You’ll meet tons of people who are in the same boat as you. Explore the campus and familiarize yourself with important locations like lecture halls, the library, and student services. Sign up for clubs and societies that interest you—it’s a great way to make friends and pick up new hobbies.
Don’t:
Feel pressured to do everything. It’s okay to take a break and recharge. Spend all your money at once. Freshers Week can be overwhelming with all the cool stuff on offer, but remember, you’re here for the long haul.

Freshers Week is your golden opportunity to kick off university life on the right foot. Whether you're into partying or prefer a quieter vibe, there’s something for everyone. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, because this is where some of your best uni memories will be made and where you might meet your forever friends.
