PLS HELP: biomed

hi i’m starting biomed in september and i have been told and have read that it is very difficult to get a job after graduation especially if your course isn’t IBMS accredited (mine isn’t). i haven’t applied for placement year but i think i am still able to apply for it. i don’t know if i should still go to uni if the chances of getting a decent job or becoming a biomedical scientist is very low. PLEASE HELP i really don’t know what to do 😔

please do a placement year, otherwise it’d be even harder from what I’ve heard 😣

If you want to be a biomedical scientist then you must do an IBMS accredited degree. Or have the IBMS assess your degree and pay to complete top up modules (you can't use your student loan and there are no funding options at the moment).

If you want to do something else with your biomed degree then it doesn't matter, but if you want to be a biomedical scientist you would be better off trying to switch courses or taking a gap year (maybe getting a job in an NHS lab so you can see what the job is first)

Yes! An accredited degree is only important if you want onto become a Biomedical Scientist. Biomedical Scientist is a protected title in the UK and so you must be registered with the HCPC to be one.

If you want to use the degree for something else like research or industry or a graduate scheme then it doesn't matter.

But I would work it out before starting so you don't spend £50k on a degree you can't use.
