what societies should i join in uni and how should i make friends?

1.

Interest-Based Societies: Start with societies that align with your hobbies or passions. Whether it's sports, music, theater, photography, gaming, or even something niche like a film appreciation society, being around people who share your interests makes it easier to connect.

2.

Academic Societies: Joining a society related to your course or field of study is a great way to meet people who are on the same academic journey as you. It’s also helpful for networking, study groups, and finding out about useful resources.

3.

Cultural and International Societies: If you're interested in exploring different cultures or connecting with people from similar backgrounds, these societies are a great choice. They often have a welcoming and inclusive vibe, with lots of social events and activities.

4.

Volunteering or Charity Groups: These societies are perfect if you’re looking to give back to the community while meeting like-minded, compassionate people. Working together for a cause can really help bond people.

5.

Try Something New: Uni is a perfect time to try something completely out of your comfort zone. You might surprise yourself with a new passion, and it's a great conversation starter when meeting new people.

As for making friends, the best advice is to just be open and approachable. Attend the society meetings and events, and don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation with someone who looks like they might be feeling a bit shy too. Sometimes it’s as simple as introducing yourself and asking if they want to grab a coffee or study together. Remember, most people are also looking to make friends and will be happy that you reached out.
And don't stress too much if it takes time. Friendships at uni often form gradually and in unexpected ways. Be yourself, get involved, and good things will come your way!
Good luck, and have fun exploring all the amazing opportunities at uni!

At my uni, they used "Unidingo" for society and events stuff, not sure where you are headed but do check it out

Oh yeah mine too, low-key its how I made all my friends. Pick one society, sell your soul to them, and you're guaranteed to become a social butterfly
Did you find it helpful? I thought it was a pretty cool way to break the ice and find people with similar interests before things got too hectic with classes and everything. It definitely took some of the pressure off when it came to meeting people in person.
That said, I think it’s important to use it as a starting point rather than relying on it completely. It’s great for getting a sense of who’s around and maybe setting up that first meetup, but I found that some of my best friendships formed more organically through classes, societies, or just random encounters on campus.
