The Student Room Group

GCSE to A level jump.

My gcse grades were 9887666553

There are multiple reasons to why I only achieved average grades at GCSE but I am hope to get A*A*A for a level so that I can go on to study medicine at university

I am about to go into year 12 to study bio chem and psychology (potentially history as I enjoy that and I know for med you only need bio and chem)

Combined science 9-8
Maths 7
History 8

These are the good gcse grades in the subjects important to my courses so that may help in the context.
Also I am not sure whether or not I should do maths as it seems like an interesting subject but considering I only got a 7 maybe I should stick to taking psychology or history.

I have also got into a sixth form with an average grade outcome of a B, I do not want to be part of it though and I need to exceed the majority of students there. (sadly I didn’t get into my first choice due to my low average point score).

Anyways, if anyone has any advice I’d really appreciate it thank you.

Well done with your gcse grades!!! As a current year 12 going into year 13 i suggest really having a look at what subjects you choose and making the right choice. As if you don’t it can have a real toll on your grades. Good that you’re aiming high for all A*s but when you start A-levels you will realise it is harder than it seems but don’t be disheartened. With maths I have friends who currently take it some enjoy it and some say it is hard but of course everyone is different and it is your preference that counts. Good choice as-well of going to a decent six-form but just know those grades of the six-form doesn’t define you and you can get those A*s if you work hard. Hope this helps if have any more questions feel free to ask!

Also don’t worry but not getting into your first choice as at the end of day its how you do when you sit your actual A-level exams not the school you go!
mate i did absolutely horrible in my gcses and starting medical school this yr after reciving 4 offers . Your gcse were much better than mine but i do appreciate not the best so to compensate just make sure you prep early for ucat and smash it meaning that due to your low gcses unfortnely will limit the amount of med schools you can apply to , with a good UCAT it opens the doors and gives you optitons . Worst case sceriono , as long as you get at least aaa gap yr do ucat again and ur chillin and one day hoepfully ull be a doc . gl in the future lad and soz for spelling eorrs
