How much to spend on uni moving out?

How much do people generally spend on supplies to move to uni (stuff like bedding, kitchen stuff)?
I would say you can get a lot of things you need from around your house (spare towels etc), then spend maybe £100 max on everything else.

Hi there,

I totally agree with @saskiahdltea - you can get a lot of the things you need from home. I got my bedding, towels, cleaning supplies, and some kitchen stuff from home.

I didn't spend a lot on much else. There are some great, cheaper places that you can get supplies, such as supermarkets, TK Maxx, B&M, etc. I'd also recommend looking at Marketplace to see if anything is going for a good price, as some of my stuff ended up getting quite damaged at university, so I'm glad I didn't spend a lot on it.

I hope this helps,

Hi,

It really depends how much you're taking from home and how much you're planning on picking up when you arrive! 🙂 When I moved to Kingston, I took most of my bedding/towels/kitchen supplies from home, but I still had to buy some of the more bulky items (duvet, pillows, larger pots) from nearby stores like Primark, Argos and TK Maxx. I'd say £100 or so is a good budget. From my experience, there's little point in investing in anything too high-quality at this point - things do get lost/broken, especially if you're living with other people - and you can always replace/upgrade things if you find you need to over the next few years.

Best of luck, and have fun moving in!

Hi there if you are moving into shared accommodation you could contact your flatmates to see what kitchen utensils they are bringing for example because if they seem up for it you could share things like colanders and pans etc. Places like Primark, Asda and Home Bargains do cheap cutlery and plates as well.

Hi

It does really depend on yourself, due to it depending on how many different things you want to take to Uni, as others have said you can generally take things with you that you already have from home - towels, bedding, clothes, some kitchen items...

And other things that you might want to purchase can be done so very cheaply from shops like B&M and Ikea.

You could also look on second-hand sites to see what they offering on there and the majority of the time, it is for free or very cheap.

I hope this helps,

Hi there,

You have some great advice from others on this thread and I would agree that if you can find things around your house or get things second hand, £100 seems like a good budget to aim for.

I would suggest looking in charity shops as you can often find some good things in there which will be really useful to you. They often have big bric a brac sections where you can get plates, bowls etc. You won't need many as you will likely just be cooking for yourself so just 2 plates, bowls etc will be enough. It also might get broken, especially in first year when you are in halls so you don't want to buy any that are expensive anyway. Another good thing about charity shops is that the things you find are often quite unique so you won't get them mixed up with any else's things either!

I would also look on Facebook market place or if you have a sibling or friend that has finished uni and might not need all of their things, you could always get some things from them too which would save you money.

Places like B&M, home bargains etc are good too to get cheap things from. Also look out for any sales as sometimes IKEA does student events or supermarkets like Tesco and Asda have sales as they know everyone will be buying things to take to university!

I hope this helps!

Hi Anom,

I totally agree with the budget of £100 that others have suggested.

My favourite shop to buy supplies from was B&M and The Range. You can get bedding, kitchen supplies and more for a great price. There is also some small décor you could grab to make your room more homely. I also recommend setting some of the budget aside for stationary and notepads, even if your not using them in class they are extremely useful.

Also remember you don't need to buy everything brand new. You can go to local charity shops or online sites (vinted, ebay etc) to get used goods at a discount price.

If you ever need a guide for items to bring to university, I recommend looking at the UCAS list of essentials. This is a great guideline to use, however I also recommend checking what your accommodation already supplies you with (e.g mine already supplies new mattress protectors).

Best of luck with university, please feel free to ask my any questions,
