Studying Law this year and recently lost hearing

I studying law and recently lost my hearing, I now use the aids of hearing aids to help but I still struggle to hear in group discussions. I am extremely anxious about the struggles I will face with other class colleagues and in group discussions. Can anyone advise what support I can receive? What difficulties I may face? I have had an assessment with the Uni for support but I am just more worried about others impatience and my own self-esteem in situations.

If you get DSA they can offer you this thing called glean which can help you record your lectures.

I have also seen some students with additional needs have assistants attend classes with them.

I understand your concerns about the students but perhaps this could be an opportunity to use assertiveness and stand up for yourself. This will serve you really well in the legal profession.

Also focus on the people who are kind and there to support you, don’t focus on the people who are rude or impatient. Putting yourself around unkind people will decrease self esteem.

Be kind to yourself, speak to yourself like you would a good friend.

Don’t be afraid to ask for things to be repeated or to set boundaries with others.

Make use of the disability support team at uni, the mental health teams and well-being team.

I really hope things go well for you and this can be used to demonstrate resilience when applying for legal roles
Hi There

We understand that you have recently experienced hearing loss which is having an impact on your Uni course especially the group discussion element. We think that it is important that you share this with your lecturer or Student Support Service so that they can support you to be involved in every aspect of your law course 🫶

We think that it might be worthwhile to take a look at these resources on the Mind website if you have noticed that this is having an impact on your self-esteem right now. We also empower you to reach out to RNID as they support people who are deaf, have hearing loss, or tinnitus. They may be able to make some really good suggestions about what reasonable adjustments Uni can make to support you better 👍

You have done really well to use this space to be honest about how you are feeling. If you are feeling like suicide is an option right now then you can call Hopeline247 on 0800 068 4141 or Text us on 88247 to speak to a trained Suicide Prevention Adviser who will be more than happy to help 💟
