Law or Engineering at Oxford/Cambridge

Hi everyone!

I would like to ask you for an advice on what to do next. I am currently taking a gap year and going to decided on the faculty.
I have won some math olympiads like BMO in the UK and in my previous countries. And I always had good physics results. But I like law and have a lot of things to tell about it in my personal statement. For law at Oxford I have to take Lnat and it seems to be hard for me to understand all words in those texts with my C1 IELTS. On the other hand, I did several PAT practise papers and got around 76-78 but still I am not sure if I can pass in the interview. Same with law, I don't have any idea on what they might ask me.

Do you have any advice? Thank you in advance

Engineering would be a better choice. Because the LNAT would be difficult for you as your English is not as good as it could be?! 😧 What are your A-Level grades?

Apply for the course you want to do most not the one that you think will maximise your chances of admission.

This will be the only course that you will spend years studying and Law and Engineering are very, very different.

Oxbridge is not the best place to study Engineering.

Oxbridge is not the best place to study Engineering.

is it because it is hard to get into or because of the content?

I got A*AB for maths, physics and further maths so I am taking gap year and will retake further maths

You will be a strong applicant with Maths, Further Maths and Physics for Engineering at Cambridge University or even Oxford University as well as Imperial College London. 🙂

I won BMO round 2 last year. I checked and it seems like Oxford is easier to get into, they have higher acceptance rate

OP will not be a strong applicant with A*AB. Both universities require A*A*A for their Engineering courses. Their subjects will not be an issue but their grades may be.

Just curious but does Oxford allow A level retakes if you have extenuating circumstances that caused you to underperform?

I'm not sure, I can only speak about Cambridge, for which I know they do accept some resits if there are extenuating circumstances but significant underachievement may not be as accepted as elsewhere. You would have to email your preferred college to see if that applies to you with your circumstances.

It is not helpful to others to give unrealistic advice such as this. As melancollege observes, the OP's A level grades will be a problem (whether applying to read law or engineering).

OP, thegeek888 is either a troll or is a hopeless dreamer with unrealistic ideas. He hasn't passed any A levels or applied to any university, and he is not an authoritative source of advice on university entrance. He does, however, make one good point above: law requires good English skills, and you would have to upgrade your English before applying to study law.

As others have suggested, it's best to study a subject that you are very interested in. If you would like to become a lawyer, you can do that with a degree in any subject (and that would also give you time to improve your English). If you would like to become an engineer, you usually have to study engineering at some level, and nowadays most professional engineers have degrees in engineering. James Dyson didn't study engineering, but he's not typical.

Thank you very much for your advice! I contacted both the universities and they would expect me to retake further maths and that's it

Good luck. As you may already know, it's best to look at a range of universities, including those which will accept your existing grades in case you do not improve on those.

thank you! yes, that's true, but I am sure I underperformed because of my health, I was feeling terrible on the exam days and those universities replied that they didn't expect all those grades to be achieved in one sitting so I hope I will be fine
