IPad or Laptop?

Im starting as an architecture student soon, I already have a PC that can handle all the software required for my course, but I dont know whether I should invest in a Laptop or a iPad as my parents are willing to get the full set for an iPad pro with the pencil and keyboard or a laptop.
I do prefer the iPad as I would be able to sketch with it, but having a laptop that runs on windows with all the software would also be useful.
I should probably add that I already have an iPad and laptop but both are around 7 years old have terrible batteries.

Replace the battery on your old laptop. It should cost around £35 - depending on make and model. And should take about 15 minutes to get the back off the laptop, replace the battery and test it.

If your laptop has an SSD (and not a mechanical hard drive) it should be plenty fast enough for supplementing your desktop as a mobile computing device.

It'd be a shame to send a good enough laptop to landfill, just because the battery had reached end of life.
