The Student Room Group

I dont even want to go to university.. what do I do?

I'm set to study law in less than 2 weeks. I was pressured by my parents to go to university and have no real alternative options. My A level results were mid, meaning I wouldn't be able to just reapply.

My parents however are threatening to make me pay them rent if I refuse to go to university and have been treating me terribly in an attempt to make me despise my current life at home.

What do I do? So much money feels like its being wasted. I can't even afford the rent for my student accomodation. And I'll be in £50K+ debt by the end of this all with no real job guarantee since everyone seems to be doing law these days.

I am also not doing very well mentally but I can't do much about that. I've tried, but I cant seem to get medication and I'm unable to get a therapist. So this isn't helping at all, but I can't really do much about it.

Does anyone have any solutions? Any advice?

Nobody has any real job guarantee for any course. That’s the risk people take. If you don't want to go to uni, let your parents know and consider apprenticeships.

As you do not have any current alternative, I suggest that you go for this year whilst considering your options. If you find other things to do, you can drop out and focus on that. Dont lose the opportunity.

Also, it is possible to change courses whilst at uni. So if Law is not your thing, you enrol and ask to change to something similar. Sometimes they accept the change request.

I'd go to uni, I know that seems counterintuitive but bear with me here it just to keep the peace in the meantime look for a job there are loads you can do without a degree I found this list with a quick search they pay fairly well those are only a sample a friend of mine left a law course and became air crew also you don't need a degree to become an airline pilot .

I can full on relate to what you're saying. I did NOT want to go to university either. I had no desire to further my education. What changed my mind was living in the country of Vanuatu for 2 years. While in Vanuatu I learned to speak Bislama, their national language, and learned about their culture. Learning all this helped me to become curious about the world around me and I wanted to learn more and so after living 2 years in Vanuatu I enrolled in university. I can also related to mental health part that you are talking about. What has helped for me, besides medication, is exercise, a healthy diet, and early morning and evening sun light. With that said, medication can be a game changer, but if that is not an option what I listed can be helpful.
