Student Finance for Medicine

Hi,

I've read all the guidance on student finance online and can't seem to find the answer to my particular circumstance.

I am currently 44 years old. In my 20s I studies for a Bachelors (with Hons) degree. I didn't achieve the the Hons, but do have the degree (from what I read online the Hons may make a difference).

I now want to study Medicine A100 which is a 5 year course.

Looking at the online guidance, it generally states that if I am studying for a second degree, student finance in not available. However, it also states that "You could also be eligible if you’re starting a healthcare course on or after 1 August 2017". I can't find any further guidance on this.

Given my circumstance, is student finance available?

Thanks

Hi there,

Can you confirm how many years of previous study you have? You already hold an undergraduate qualification? What university will you attend?

Thanks, Drew

Hi,

I went to university as a mature student at 21 years old, the degree course was 3 years.

Between that and school I didn't do any further education apart from a BTEC in Electronic Servicing Level/Part 1 when on an apprenticeship.

I am hoping to study Medicine at Keele University.

Many thanks

Hi there,

Did you get an undergraduate degree for the 1st course that you studied?

Thanks, Drew

Yes, however, I did not achieve the Hons, even though the course was a with hons degree.

I only mention this as the online information does seem to differentiate between hons and non-hons degrees when applying for student finance.

Thanks,

Hi there,

If you hold an undergraduate degree then you are eligible to apply for the Maintenance Loan for the 1st 4 years of the course. In the 5th year you are entitled to an income assessed bursary from the NHS. You will not get the Tuition Fee Loan.

Thanks, Drew
