A national insurance number is required for getting student loans paid

Hello, my daughter is a UK citizen living in the EU with home fees for the Uni she is set to begin in two weeks. She has been approved for student finance, but a condition of the loan being paid is that she has a national insurance number. She has lived abroad since she was 2 and therefore has no NI number. It is not possible--or at least not so far--to apply for a NI number from abroad, and having an interview in the UK will be very difficult except when she has already started her uni. Ideas on how to proceed? Many thanks.

Hi there,

Your daughter will need to apply for a National Insurance Number when she is in the UK. If she doesn't we will block her funding after the 1st term. Thanks, Drew

Hi, thanks. So how should we handle this with paying the first term's fees? Get an extension from the university? Or can SLC provide a letter? Best regards.

Hi there, Funding will be released for term 1 and then all future payments blocked until National Insurance Number has been provided. Thanks, Angela

Hi, one other question: how do we tell SLC that the NI number will be obtained while she is in the UK during the first semester? Many thanks.

Hi there, Once the NI number is available please ask her to contact us by calling 0300 100 0607. Thanks, Angela

But the first term's fees will be paid without the NI number? Or do we need to warn them about this?
Hi there, Yes, that is correct. But future payments will be blocked until NI Number is received and validated. Thanks, Angela

Hi again, we have been confused by a phone conversation with SLC on the number above, where we were told that the first term's fees would be withheld without the NI number, despite my daughter not even being able to apply for the number yet. Any ideas on how to dispel the confusion? Many thanks.

Hi there,

We can make term 1 payments without the NI Number, but future payments (after first term) will be blocked. We would require a valid NI Number to unblock future payments. I do apologise for the inconvenience and confusion.

Thanks,
Ross

So will this payment be automatically carried out, or do we need to make a special request/let SLC know that she will apply once in the UK? Thanks and best regards.

Hi there, if the application is approved then once the university releases the payment this will be paid but again this would be for term 1 only without the National Insurance Number. Thanks, Jason

Hi, yet another problem: the university of my daughter has asked for her to send a copy of the award letter from Student Finance as they have not had confirmation that they are responsible for the payment of the tuition fees--but she has had no such letter, possibly because they have not been furnished with a national insurance number, which of course she does not have yet. HELP! How should she proceed?
Hi Texas rose,

The National Insurance Number would not affect the approval of the loan itself, it only stops payments being released until the National Insurance Number is provided and validated by the DWP.

The student would be best contacting us via live chat on their account or calling so that an adviser can check the progress of the application and can confirm the approximate date for the entitlement letter being issued.

(She found out she was approved from the website after she logged in.)
Hi Texas rose,

That's great, she will be able to see her entitlement letter in the inbox on her account which she can provide to the university to confirm that her Tuition Fee Loan has been awarded.

Thanks, Clare
