York Maintenance Costs + Costs of Private Accommodation in Y2

Hi, I've been wondering how much it would cost to live in York at the university for one academic year (excluding the accommodation costs). How much money would I need to stay afloat as I've heard York is somewhat expensive to live in. Would £5,000 or less be sufficient for the whole year?

Also, how much does York (and its surrounding areas) roughly cost per month for student accommodation? Is it usually above £200 for 40 weeks?

Hi there,

It's great to hear you're considering studying at York 😄

Other than your rent, your next biggest costs will likely be food, travel, social commitments and equipment for your study needs. How much you spend on these will be partly up to you and what you plan to do outside of your degree.

We have advice on living costs for undergraduate students and postgraduate students - I'd recommend checking out these pages for some helpful resources and to get an idea of the cost of living in York. We also have a Cost of Living Hub which signposts to all our resources and support for students who might be struggling with the cost of living.

To give you an idea of accommodation prices in York, our on-campus accommodation for 2024/25 ranged in price from £99 to £241 per week for undergraduate accommodation, and from £99 to £245 per week for postgraduate accommodation. The prices depend on several things including: whether the room is catered or self-catered, shared bathroom or ensuite, the number of people you share the accommodation with and the age of the accommodation.

I hope this helps you get an idea of what it will cost to live in York and whether £5,000 (plus rent) will be enough to cover your expenses. If you have any more questions just let us know!

Hannah 😀

rather than start a new thread adding to this one because I have a similar question

My daughter is very keen on York for 2025 entry and, if she gets the grades, would aim to be in halls for Year 1. She is likely to move out in Year 2 so I did some online research and see rental prices for student houses in York are bonkers (ie £4000/month and more)

Is it really that expensive?! Or are the online prices I saw not really representative of what is affordable / available in York?

Hey - thanks for reaching out. We're so happy to hear we're on your daughter's shortlist!

On our Finding private sector accommodation web page we have links to a range of private landlords and purpose build student accommodation. For 25/26 the purpose built options average at around £250/week for an ensuite. It may have been you were looking at the total rent amount per month shared across a high number of students for £4000/month? - as that's not typical for an individual to pay alone for student accommodation in York!

Please feel free to contact [email protected] (+44 (0)1904 324140) who support our current students with finding accommodation options following their first year, or [email protected] (+44 (0)1904 322165) for any questions about our on-campus accommodation.

I hope this helps!
