Physics degree without Further Maths A2?

I'm worried about applying to universities like Manchester and Durham without the full A2 in further maths- how likely am I to still get an offer? I enjoyed further maths A2 but I feel like 4 a-levels would be too much for me (I am already stressed) and I don't want to drop english as I've worked so hard for it already and enjoy it too. Would it look really bad if I only have the AS in further maths, despite having A2 available to me?
I am also doing a physics- based EPQ as my school makes us.
I'm going into year 13 and I am doing Physics, Maths, English Literature A-levels, and am predicted 3 A*s.
In year 12 I took AS further maths and got an A.

Hi, well done for choosing down the physics route. my eldest daughter did the same. Manchester you just need physics and maths but you need A*A* in both. Likewise with Durham as well.

Her route was different. she did physics maths FM and chemistry and EPQ. Stressed was her middle name. 4 Alevels can be ok, but Chemistry is a weighty subject as well as physics, she nearly did drop the Chemistry in year 13, but put the brakes on putting a lot of effort in that one and then covid happened that year so never took the exam. So you are doing right in choosing 3 you love to do and plus not only that, your EPQ in physics related subject is definitely worth it. Its great to go in your application to uni. AS is definitely worth doing for year 12 for further maths. You will have a bit of a head start, but even if you dont, thats ok, everyone catches up in year 1 of uni.

If you are going to apply to uni, make sure you have unis with a broad spectrum of grade requirements. Definitely the aspirational A*A* is great for a couple of universities, but also head on for the AAA or the AAB even.
Her choices were Oxford A*A*A, York AAA, Lancaster AAA (two types of physics subjects), and Leicester ABB(offered BBC). She did EPQ in particle physics, and an online MOOC free course in the summer, as well as watching pbs spacetime podcasts, and having second hand books like professor poveys perplexing maths problems. And also visit a uni or two in year 12. She went to leeds and realised its not for her, so its best to do that rather than having to visit all 5 in september and october of year 13.

She ended up going to Lancaster with Physics, Particle physics and Cosmology pathway for a 4 years integrated masters. First year it was Alevel maths and Alevel futher maths in some topics. Like she didnt have to do network flow which she hated in alevel lol. Anyone who did not take the further maths element in alevel could catch up by the end of first year. All this was back in 2020 and she graduated this year, but if she could do it all again, she would most certainly ditch the chemistry lol.

Thank you so much for the long reply, this is very helpful and reassuring!! I am applying to York and Cardiff, and probably one other with lower requirements so am keeping the range broad. Thank you and your daughters success sounds amazing!

Welcome 🙂 you have a couple of good choices there in York and Cardiff. Daughter currently at Manchester for her phd. Enjoy your Alevels and uni visits 🙂
