Choosing an ancillary module for chemistry

Hi everyone, I'm starting at Imperial this year and I'm having trouble deciding which ancillary module to choose. My options are Maths and Physics, Medicinal Chemistry, or Languages through Horizons, but I'm torn on whether to pick a language or the maths and physics module. For context I did maths, chemistry, and biology A levels, and AS further maths (mechanics & statistics) and I am on the MSci with research abroad and a year in industry (F101). If I do choose to keep with the year abroad, I would much prefer studying in English.

I would like to continue learning maths, and study some physics since I did not do physics A level. If I don't do Maths and Physics 1, I wouldn't be able to pick it up in year 2 if I wanted to continue it, or if I didn't, I would still have the option to do a language with Horizons in year 2 (I think?).

However, I would also like to study a language. I could grow my French, or perhaps begin learning German for a year abroad in Zurich (taught in English). Maybe I would even enjoy medicinal chemistry despite brushing it off?

I would appreciate advice from anyone who has taken any of these optional modules or has done similar. Thank you!

I didn't mean to post this anonymously oops
u can do maths and physics as part of your degree and take a horizons language module outside of your degree
sorry you can do med chem as part of the degree and horizons outside also - I don't know how feasible maths and physics without a level physics would be though

have you taken the maths and physics module? if so how much a level physics did you use? at open days i've been told it's okay to do it without the a level

Hi, entering imperial this year myself, so I don’t have any experience, but I did some research with all of those questionaries being sent to us. My course is F124 (Chemistry with Medicinal Chemistry MSci), so the choice was already made by past me, but I have looked at all options out of interest.
As was said before me, you can take a language as a horizon (which are optional courses, and can only give you extra credits, that do not count towards you degree credits). But if you want to enter at a level above beginner, you need a proof of our level of language (like GCSE, A-level, IB, or language test, you can find which exactly on their website).
Overview for Medicinal chemistry 1 said that this course will be focused (as far as I understand) on organic aspects of chemistry and cellular aspects of biology. So if you enjoyed that kind of stuff during a-level, maybe you should consider it. If you didn’t, then I’d recommend against taking this course.
As for Physics and Math 1, technically doing a-level physics is not a requirement to enter, so it’s meant that student who didn’t do it should be capable of completing this course. Obviously it will be easier for those, who did physics before, but further math should also be an okay base.
And I definitely recommend reading through all the information they give on the website (might take a bit of searching) and in the welcome booklet they sent everyone via email, if you haven’t done so before.
To summarize, I recommend getting as much info on course details as you can, and then comparing it to the topics you enjoyed or didn’t enjoy during a-levels. And then choose the one that has the most of what you enjoyed/where good at. Obviously university course will have much more topics, than a-levels had, so there still will be some wondering about what you will you enjoy more, as you have never done anything like that. That’s why I would try to judge based on adjacent experiences I had (the most similar stuff I learned before).
Hope that helps! (and sorry for being a yapper?)

Thank you so much for your yapping, it was really useful! I went with Maths and Physics 1 in the end, and I hope I can do French Level 1 as extra credit.

no sorry i'm not at imperial yet i was just wondering about maths and physics - if you've already spoken to people though then i'm sure its fine!!! you can also always use that chat feature on the website if u have any qs

did physics at uni, but I'd agree with that advice
