The benefits of an Award winning Careers team at DMU
As a third-year student at De Montfort University Leicester (DMU), I’ve had the privilege of experiencing firsthand why our university's Careers Team was named the best in the country at the 2024 TargetJobs National Graduate Recruitment Awards. From day one, I’ve benefited from a wealth of support and industry-relevant experiences that have been crucial in shaping my career path.
At DMU, the Careers Team goes above and beyond, offering exciting career opportunities in every year of your degree. Whether it's working with major brands in Vietnam, honing your enterprise skills in Los Angeles, or landing a role with Leicester City Football Club, the team ensures that every student has access to unique, career-enhancing experiences.
What sets DMU apart is the personalized support available through specialist careers teams embedded in every faculty. These teams help students like me explore opportunities in Leicester, the UK, and beyond. As part of DMU’s Careers Commitment, students are guaranteed work experience opportunities, flexible career support tailored to individual needs, and access to a plethora of digital tools like LinkedIn Learning, practice interviews, and instant CV feedback through the Careers Team Skills Hub.
The Careers Hub, based on the ground floor of the Hugh Aston Building, is the heart of this support network. Open weekdays from 10 am to 3 pm, it’s where students can drop in for CV reviews, interview preparation, and even try out Bodyswaps, our state-of-the-art virtual reality equipment designed to help you master your interview technique. The Hub is also staffed with Careers Ambassadors who provide valuable peer-to-peer advice.
Reflecting on my journey, the Careers Team played an instrumental role in helping me secure my role as an engineering research intern through the Front Runners program. Their guidance was invaluable—they assisted me in filling out the application and provided thorough interview preparation. Beyond this, they encouraged me to join the Black Talent and Leadership in STEM organization, where I’ve had the opportunity to attend networking events across the country that have been incredibly beneficial.
The Careers Team also keeps students informed about placements, internships, and part-time jobs on and around campus through Unitemps. Thanks to their support, I’ve had various roles at DMU, including as a clearing assistant, invigilator, and student ambassador, all of which have added to my professional experience.
One of the best things about the DMU Careers Team is that their support doesn’t end when you graduate. Once you’re a DMU student, these services are available to you for life, making DMU a fantastic choice for anyone focused on building a successful career.
The Careers Team was one of the reasons I chose DMU, and I’d make the same choice again in a heartbeat. Their commitment to student success is second to none, and it’s clear why they’ve earned their place as the best in the country.
