Best Work Experiences to put for internship CV

Hi everyone,

I'm about to start my 2nd year of university and I'm preparing to apply for summer internships in Software Engineering, AI, and Data Science. I have several experiences, but i've listed the ones im trying to pick from, I'm not sure which ones I should prioritize on my applications. Could you help me decide which experiences would be most relevant and impressive for these types of internships?
Here are the experiences I'm considering:

NLP Project at a Startup (Summer 2024): I worked on an NLP project that will be deployed to the public soon.
Hackathon Winner & Best Programmer (Summer 2022): I won 1st place in a hackathon and was awarded Best Programmer for building a mobile app that provides real-time water pH data to farmers.

Hackathon Ambassador (Summer 2023): I served as an ambassador at the same hackathon, where I gave a presentation on AI to 60 people and led a team of 7 to 3rd place.

IBM Work Experience (Winter 2021): I completed a small data analysis project using Python.

Cisco Work Experience (Start of 2021): I developed algorithms and worked on a small-scale data analysis project.

2 Vodafone Projects (Summer 2021&2022): I created an environmental app from frontend to backend using Java and AdobeXD.

The problem im facing here is that some of these are known companies but were done during sixth form so i dont know if they will be important enough or attractve to employers

Which of these experiences do you think would be the most valuable to for internships in SWE, AI, and Data Science?

Thank you

Hey! It’s great that you’ve got so many solid experiences to choose from, and it’s awesome that you’re already preparing for internships in your second year. Picking which experiences to highlight can be tricky, but you've got a lot going for you.

For internships in Software Engineering, AI, and Data Science, I’d recommend focusing on a combination of your more recent and technically advanced projects, as well as ones that showcase leadership and real-world application. Here’s how I’d prioritise:

NLP Project at a Startup (Summer 2024) Since this is both recent and in the AI space, it’ll be super relevant. The fact that the project is being deployed to the public is a strong selling point—it shows that your work is not just academic, but practical and impactful.

Hackathon Winner & Best Programmer (Summer 2022) - Winning a hackathon is impressive, and being awarded Best Programmer stands out as a key achievement. The project you worked on also shows innovation and problem-solving, both of which are crucial for software engineering and data science roles.

IBM Work Experience (Winter 2021) - Data analysis using Python is highly relevant to both AI and Data Science, and IBM’s name will definitely catch employers’ attention. Even though this was a bit earlier, it’s still valuable because of the direct technical skills involved.

Vodafone Projects (Summer 2021 & 2022) - These could be worth mentioning depending on the role you’re applying for, especially if the job leans towards software engineering. Developing an app from front to back shows versatility in coding and design, plus experience with Java is always useful.

Don't worry too much about the timing - yes, some experiences were from sixth form, but what matters most is how relevant the skills are now. Employers will care about your progression and what you've learned from these projects, not just when they happened. Also, remember to check if your university has a career service like we do here at Salford—ours is really helpful for refining CVs and applications, and they could give you more personalised feedback.

Good luck with your applications, you’ve got an impressive background already! 😊
