Most universities you can study 2 or even 3 languages. It depends on your level of attainment in the languages when you apply. Most of them don’t require interviews. I think that Oxford, Cambridge and maybe UCL and Durham ask for interviews, but check on their websites.

Question about taking 2 languages: Need some advice: I’ve got offers to do French(post A level) and Italian at 2 unis and Spanish at the rest( at beginner level). My question is can your beginner language really reach the same standard as your post A level language after 4 years?According to the uni blurb you can. Also the year abroad looks tricky with splitting your time between 2 countries, 3 months speaking only one of your languages would set your other language back? Your thoughts would be welcomed, thank you.

Sorry for late reply.
-picking up a language ab initio does seem difficult, however by the end of first year they project that you will have reached a level standard- intensive courses
-I honestly think having a year split 6 months spain 6 months france would be brilliant, plenty of time to acclimatise
I've always said having already learned french has helped my spanish a lot due to linguistic similarities within the two languages
Where have you applied to? Congrats on your offers so far

Dear Ben,
Thank you so much for your very helpful reply. I suddenly got into a panic about the amount of work etc. I have unconditional offers from Royal Holloway, Kent, Queen Mary and Kings College(London). Am now just waiting on UCL but would be more than happy to go to Kings if rejected by UCL( my first choice). Where did you do your French and Spanish?

Congratulations on those offers, that is phenomenal-I’m sure you’ll be more than fine getting to a high level in no time. As for me I just attend a local comprehensive sixth form, doing geography and my two languages (also did EPQ!!)

Hbu?

Thank you. In answer to your question, as I am a mature student, I did my A level French and Access to HE Diploma with online providers. What universities are you planning to apply to?

I submitted my application last week, and so far I’ve had my Durham offer at AAA.
Have also applied for Edinburg, Sheffield, York and Lancaster however I’m only really considering Edinburgh of those four. Would be expensive however for the same length of course I would get a masters degree qualification, as seems to be the case with most Scottish unis.

Hello All!

I really encourage you all to consider applying to Lancaster University for your Modern Language Studies. This degree gives you the opportunity to study three languages. We offer Chinese, French, German or Spanish as major subjects and Italian as minor subject. This degree includes an international placement year where you will study abroad and a large amount of choice in both the languages you will study and cultural modules that bring your chosen languages to life.

We are ranked 3rd for Iberian Languages, 3rd for French and 4th for Italian in the UK, across the respective league tables.

In terms of Lancaster as a place, we are situated in the North West, about an hour / hour and a half from Manchester and Liverpool. We are a campus based uni which, in my opinion, makes that first transitional year away from home so much easier when living on campus as everything you need, and everyone you will come to know is on your door step! If you have any questions regarding life at Lancaster, or specifically Modern Languages, I would really encourage you to reach out to our studies on your uni buddy service where you can ask them anything you like, this is accessible HERE.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask away!

Taylor (Lancaster Uni Student Ambassador).
