Fed up of booktok.

Booktok has ruined my life. The main issue is that it's the SAME BOOKS EACH AND EVERY TIME EVERYONE IS A CARBON COPY!!

Murder mystery recommendations? AGGGTM, One of us is lying, 13 reasons why, ect. The format of each book is almost identical.

'oh but moon! Theyre different because of the plot twist!! I never suspected xyz!!'

Yeah, maybe that works sometimes, but its a one trick pony. There's no murder mystery if you always go for the least obvious.

Dark romance book recommendations? They aren't even romantic, you spend 98% of the book stunned by why they would stay with such a disgusting person and 2% wanting to chuck it in the fireplace.

recommendations for books by Obscure Authors and the comments are like 'Oh have you read Kafka, he's pretty underground and so is Dostoyevsky!' Are you actually kidding bruh.

And then there's those coquette aesthetic accounts who don't understand WHY Lolita was written and the fact that wishing you were in your 'girl interrupted era' is weird.

That being said, there are some BEAUTIFUL books that are recommended on booktok that i wouldnt have read without it. but lowkey just go in w low expectations

tl;dr booktok sucks, booktube is slighlty better

Totally get your frustration with BookTok's repetitive recommendations! 😅 It can definitely feel like you’re seeing the same books over and over.
For a change of pace, here are some suggestions that might break the mold:
Murder Mysteries:
1. "The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle" by Stuart Turton A unique twist with a time-loop mystery.
2. "The Truth Factory" by E.C. Diskin A gripping story with a fresh take on the genre.
3. "The Devotion of Suspect X" by Keigo Higashino A brilliant Japanese crime novel with a surprising twist.
Dark Romance:
1. "The Kiss of Deception" by Mary E. Pearson Dark and romantic with complex characters.
2. "The Shadows Between Us" by Tricia Levenseller A dark fantasy romance with a strong protagonist.
3. "The Hating Game" by Sally Thorne While not dark, it’s got a compelling edge to it.
Obscure Authors:
1. "The Master and Margarita" by Mikhail Bulgakov A bit more niche and incredibly intriguing.
2. "Stoner" by John Williams A beautifully written, lesser-known classic.
3. "The Magus" by John Fowles An under-the-radar psychological thriller.
And yeah, you’re right about the coquette aesthetic—sometimes it misses the deeper context of classic literature. But hey, glad you’ve found some gems through BookTok despite the issues. BookTube might be a better bet if you’re looking for something different!

oh don't even get me started with booktok, my cousin uses it to find books and then we read it together but oh my god the amount of times we have gotten trauma from those books-

I remember this book which was romanticising stalking and it was so bad I couldn't even finish it (my cousin is kinda into these books so she nearly finished it)

When I first read AGGGTM I thought it was good but then the other books came out and they used the same formula, btw have u seen the netflix adaption its actually terrible

oh my gosh yeah one of my friends recommended the spanish love deception... it was the worst book i've ever read.
and like, the love hypothesis, some one about chess... it's all 2 'smart' adults enemies to lovers and weird explicit scenes in the middle without them actually having talked out their emotions like normal people. it's terrible! awful! same plotline, **** writing! 😭

The pure and sheer hatred I have for booktok is unfathomable i hate it sm i completely agree with you!?!?? I see my classmates reading books and i ask what it is and 85% of the time its some wretched sorry excuse for and disgrace to literature piece of junk writing by that woman colleen vacuum cleaner and the other 15% is something cringy like its some wattpad fic printed on printer. If anything it makes me a little sad because imagine all the amazing authors out there desperately wishing and trying to get their work publishes, and then there's shi like "It ends with us" selling millions of copies its just disappointing. The romanticising sexual assault, poor mental health, toxic relationship dynamics, the list could go on, would be surprising if i didnt know what our generation is like. It's 2024 how r u okay with this stuff 😭😭💀

i knowwww.... they will romanticise the weirdest **** 😭 i do not wanna read that, and i dont want my friends thinking it's good/normal
The people who make up "booktok" are not people who actually care about or enjoy literature, they care about being perceived as caring about and being seen as enjoying literature. It's just standard social media nonsense.

For crime novels (perhaps not so much "murder mystery") I'd highly recommend Natsuo Kirino's works (Out/Real World/Grotesque). Really interesting character studies.

She also wrote a much different in terms of genre/content but also very well written and interesting book called the Goddess Chronicle based on elements of Japanese mythology.

I don’t care what anyone says AGGGTM is so overhyped like I expected the books to be so much better than what they were.I was truly disappointed but it was an ok series though

I COULD'NT AGREE WITH YOU MORE because ughhh booktok is messed up. nearly everybody has been traumatised by the disgusting sh*t written in 'romance' novels. Most of them are practically corn series.
And you're right about the murder mystery books being the SAME because I loove murder mystery but booktok makes me wanna nott read anymore. But I read some books that I absolutely loved if you wanna check them out:

1.

The Inheritance Games - Jennifer Lynn Barnes

2.

The Naturals - Jennifer Lynn Barnes

colleen vacuum cleaner 😂....but girl this is soo truee. I am still baffled at how 'It ends with us' was adapted into a movie, got promoted ever so lightly, with florals and ****, no trigger warnings whatsoever, and that too by Blake???? We call ourselves the educated generation and then these are our books, romanticizing the most out of pocket bs.
