The content of the degree and the manner in which academic work is assessed will vary from university to university.

A degree in English enables you to seek a career in pretty much any field that does not require STEM expertise. I know English graduates who work in publishing, the law, the civil service, television, theatre, teaching, academia, and all sorts of general business roles.

The best universities for English are probably the universities which are in general well known. For example: Oxford, Cambridge, the big London universities, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Exeter, Bristol, Durham, Birmingham, and other large universities across the UK.
