Is this bad practice ?

my friend just started a new job, they were at the company less than a week and they're already giving my friend a ton of work to do.

i was really shocked about this tbh, i thought they would gently ease them in the company.

Is this bad practice?
Not necessarily; welcome to the real world!

No? Many workplaces don't have the extra cash and time to for people to be 'gently eased in', often you're expected to hit the ground running and earn your pay.

My current job I got 3 dedicated training shifts and that was me expected to get on with the job without special treatment.

I agree. At quite a few places, you have X amount of training shifts, then you get on with the job. It might be expected that you may be a bit slower to begin with, but you just get on with the job.

It’s not really bad practice getting a lot of work early on can be pretty standard in some places, especially if they need someone to jump right in.
