Pregnant and nursing

I’ve recently just found out I’m pregnant and I’m just about to start university to do adult nursing. Has anyone been in a similar situation and if so what did you do? I wouldn’t be starting placement until April but this is also when I would be due. Do people defer for a year and then go back? Or do people start then return later.
hello ! this hasnt happened to me so unfortunately im not the best informed, but a girl in my group was in a similar situation to yours and she has deferred a year (however, she gave birth at the start of the academic year, so it may be different). i think it would be best if you asked your university when you get the chance, as theres always the ability to resit a placement a little later on in the year or take an interruption. best of luck for starting nursing and your pregnancy ! <3

It would make things complicated in terms of student finance and the NHS LSF if you suspend part way through an academic year. Ask your uni if it is possible to defer for a year given your circumstances.

hi

Congratulations on your baby news and hope everything goes well with your pregnancy.

So you are starting shortly at university as a student adult nurse and you are wondering what happens with you being pregnant.
So basically you have to tell your university course leaders asap about this. Then they will have to get risks assessments done. You are lucky to not be going on placement until April next year as they would have had to also get risk assessments done just for to make sure everything is ok for you to do your placement etc.

Now as you are starting in September as a student nurse you will eventually be on maternity leave ( approx 11 weeks prior to the due date of the baby - which would be around beginning of January 2025 ) technically you can continue with your studying right up to the birth of the baby as long as you are healthy enough and everything is fine with you and your baby. Only snag with continuing up to the due date is if you happen to have a day or two off sick due to the pregnancy then you will be put onto maternity leave automatically as that's generally the rules. The university will try to make you go on your maternity leave 11 weeks prior but you can say no, but I would definitely check what there policy is regarding pregnancy and when you have to go on maternity leave as each university has their own rules on that.

After the birth - you are usually on maternity leave for about 12 weeks minimum which means you would definitely be missing your first placement .

Normaw made a point in reply 2 to you regarding deferring your course for a year considering you will miss anything up to half of it if you have to go on maternity leave in January.

I would probably recommend you defer it as a registered midwife.
