Medicine 5th choice

Hi,

Is it a requirement to have a non-medicine course as my 5th choice for my UCAS application? Or is it just highly recommended?

You can only apply to 4 medicine courses via UCAS. You don't have to put a 5th if you don't want to, and in fact it's probably better not to if you want to do medicine as it would make you eligible for UCAS extra (also it's rare that med schools enter extra and clearing).
Many people will advise putting biomed as a 5th option with the intention of transferring after 1st year, but this is not a great plan since the chances of being able to transfer would be very low (picture the entire year competing for 1 or 2 spots) and you would end up wasting your money + time doing a degree you didn't really want to do.

Apologies - I've got confused. You need to use all 5 choices, have recieved decsions/withdrawn from all 5 and hold no offers be eligible for extra. What I was thinking of was when applicants apply to a random 5th course and then withdraw that application to be eligible. Hope that makes sense now
