Gay year is a great typo! You must have big hands, as there's a decent gap between p and y.
Joking apart, placements at law firms and in barristers' chambers are difficult to come by in general, and most of those available go to people who are at university or are studying for postgraduate professional exams. You could try writing to law firms and chambers near where you live. I have seen some internships advertised in the court system on its website, but am not sure if they are aimed at graduates or at people who are at university. You might see if any local CABs or legal advice centres need any volunteers to help with admin and so forth.
