Going to uni with BTECs instead of A Levels

I want to study law at uni. I’m currently year 13 and doing x2 BTEC National Extended Certificates (law and psychology), 1 A Level (sociology) and an EPQ. In my first year, I got D*D in my BTECs and A in my AS Level. I’ve always been a decently high achiever I just had a bit of fatalism as a result of my depression which caused me to apply to BTECs instead of a levels.

I want to study of the uni of York or RHUL but I’m now also considering Warwick and Exeter. But most places say u need at least 2 a levels if ur doing an extended certificate. I’ve emailed them and they said they would consider me but obviously it’s case-by-case bc law is competitive.

Im worried I’ll be at a major disadvantage. Is there anything I can do? Or anyone here that got into uni with BTECs?

Hi there,

It's great to hear you're interested in studying Law at Royal Holloway.

You can contact our Admissions team [email protected], they'll be able to advise you further and provide some information about the entry requirements for Law. You can also find out more information here: https://www.royalholloway.ac.uk/studying-here/undergraduate/law-and-criminology/law/.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes,
Royal Holloway, University of London

Hi!

I've spoken to the Law Admissions Team and this was their response, I hope it helps!

"Our current typical offer for Law is AAA at A Level, we do not have any specific subject requirements and include all subjects in our standard offer. The equivalent offer for this range of qualifications would be Grade A from one A level and Distinction, Distinction from 2 BTEC National Extended Certificates.

Our Law course is increasingly competitive and we receive a very high volume of applications each year and, due to the competitive nature of our Law programme, meeting, or being predicted to meet, our typical entry requirements does not automatically guarantee an offer of admission. Strong applications may be unsuccessful.

Please note that we consider all applications and any additional information that you send us but we are unable to give an indication of whether you will be made an offer. It is also likely that we will hold applications until the UCAS deadline for equal consideration (29th January 2025) before making any decisions.

We would be happy to consider your academic achievements fully at the time of application. In addition we will assess ability and suitability for the course applied to, skills, interests, motivation and potential as indicated in the Personal Statement and Reference. We consider all applications on an individual basis, however we are unable to advise if you would be guaranteed an offer pre-application."

Sociology is alright. It’s better than I thought it was. Most of it is just common sense, then just remembering names and theories.

To an extent, yes. Nothings easy, but it’s definitely one of the easiest subjects to do at a level

Yes. Half of the content in Year 2 repeats all of Year 1, for my exam board anyway (aqa I believe?). Definitely doable in one year

Yes I’m also doing AQA! My choices were between psych and socio, but I’m leaning towards socio. But the only thing keeping me back is the 30 marker, I’ve heard there’s no resources for it and it’s got no structure, is that true? I’m going to be doing it privately and on my own self study too, so I don’t want to mess it up for myself? What would u say? Are there enough resources, and does it have structure? Is it doable in that sense
