Pharmacy courses with level 3 BTECs

So, back in Year 11 during my GCSEs, I had my heart set on pharmacy. Unfortunately I didn't quite nail the grades for A-level chem and bio. Fast forward two years, and here I am in Year 13, feeling a bit lost about what to do with my subjects. I'm definitely keen on uni.
Right now, I'm Doing a BTEC National Diploma in applied science (that's like 2 A-levels) and a BTEC National Extended Certificate in health and social care (equivalent to 1 A-level). I'm wondering if there are any solid degrees out there that could lead to some sweet careers with good pay checks.

Hello there!

I would say your best source of advice here would be your school's careers advisor. I would say that with your BTECs you will have many doors open to different university courses and science careers. For example, if you wished you could look around for laboratory apprenticeships which get you into work right away. Alternatively, there are plenty of degrees open to you with your 3 A-Level equivalent BTECs, including Pharmacy. For example, here at Bath you can apply for Pharmacy (page here) with 3 A-level equivalent qualifications including chem. Other unis will list their requirements on their course pages too.

I hope that helps, and best of luck with your decisions!

You could still do Pharmacy.
You just need to look at 'lower' Unis and in particular at Foundation years at those Unis as a 'way in'.

It doesnt matter where you train as a Pharmacist - you will end up with an identical MPharm qualification that allows you to work as a qualified Pharmacist. The NHS wont care where you went to Uni or that your degree included an extra year - and neither will your future patients.

These are some of the Unis that accept BTEC Extended Diplomas for their MPharm Foundation years.
You need to contact them to see if what you are taking as separate BTECs is acceptable instead.

MPharm Pharmacy with Preparatory Year - 2025/26 (reading.ac.uk)
Pharmacy MPharm with preparatory year (brighton.ac.uk)
MPharm Pharmacy with a Foundation Year 2023/24 | UEA
BSc (Hons) Pharmaceutical Science with Foundation Year - University of Wolverhampton (wlv.ac.uk)
etc

Thanks @McGinger that's really helpful 🙂 -

Its also definitely important to check the professional accreditations of any course you want to apply for. For example, it would be better and easier for you career-wise if your Pharmacy course is accredited by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) as this will be your first step towards becoming a pharmacist. Equally, check if you wish to go for Biology/Biochem courses that they are accredited by the Royal Society of Biology, and the Royal Society of Chemistry for Chemistry etc.

Hope this helps too!

ALL MPharm degrees are accredited - the Uni can't call it an MPharm unless it is.

Bath requires an additional A level in Chem.
You can't apply with just BTECs.

Thank you for replying i don't think u can become a pharmacist with the pharmaceutical degree and with the other courses they offer for extended diploma i am not confident enough that they will accept my qualifications even if i achieve the highest grades for them

If you're not sure, why don't you ask them?

they dont answer any of my emails lol

Emails look like the new 'snail' mail sometimes with unis, especially if they don't have the best administration.

A timeless option with much much shorter waiting times is the good old telephone. Pick up your mobile and give them a ring. 📞

No need to sound professional - just be yourself and just ask what you want politely.

"Hello, I am interested in your pharmacy degree and wondered if you accept my qualifications. I study/have [x, y, z]. Is this something you would consider, please?"

All sorted and you'll get an answer.
How set are you on pharmacy?

The foundation year option is good advice given above :yep:

And I'd add, don't do a career path just for the money
Also I've updated your thread title :yy:
