Will somebody who got all A* at a level be favored over someone who only achieved A*A*AA because I know common/min offers for engineering is A*A*A but most get full A*s. Also please, after getting into uni do people often ask you what a level grade you've gotten in a social context.

Yes. A*A*A* is considered a "better" grade profile than A*A*AA.

Sometimes, when you're meeting fellow students for the first time. Often the question is asked by people who feel that they did well and want to brag about that fact. After those initial introductions, no-one will remember what grades anyone got, and the topic won't come-up again.

No you won’t be marked down, You should get the best scores in the aptitude or MAT test for the course, they take that into consideration and then the Interview. Make sure your personal statement shows you and your curiosity about the course. Don’t tell them show them, by building projects and anything that stands out from others. They look at your teachability too, to see if you will cope with the environment and you are right fit. And a little bit of luck too. If your portfolio is top then Luck isn’t needed. Good luck and prepare for the tests
