The Student Room Group

the y13 agenda: get three a*s, practise the piano, and have some sort of social life?

hiii i’m vera, a y13 a level student, who has just realised that revision is actually necessary to achieve predicted grades

update on progress (17.1.25)
given predicted grades A*A*A
constant piano practice resulted in a distinction in my diploma!
Oxford application process resulted in an interview and offer for French!!!
social life pending (jokes i love my friends)

what I'm still up to
daily maths practice until exams. at the time of writing I would not be getting that A
learning the rest of the maths course
finishing my English NEA
finishing my French IRP
English revision: memorising all poems, making mind-maps for each anthology piece
French revision: chapter document for each piece, essay practice, speaking practice
figuring out insurance options and student finance etc

update friday 6th september 2024:

important application stuff

i wrote a little bit more of my personal statement draft!! nearing 500 words now. even if it sounds so incredibly pretentious that i think the unis are going to just chuck it in the bin (if my head of sixth form doesn’t), it’s a start.
discovered the date for my maths resit: 30th september. i have three weeks…

my school day

free. practised for playing the piano in assembly, did some work on my english presentation, and chatted to a friend. lovely.
english. 8/10 was quite vibey. worked on a presentation about two poems, the lamb and the tyger. got to love a bit of blake. got another lesson to work on it but that’s only an hour… shall try to finish it over the weekend.
french. 9/10 brilliant: chatting + reading the book. my friend wasn’t there though so i removed a point.
assembly. 6/10. played first movement of beethoven’s pathetique which i’m doing for my diploma in front of whole school. good opportunity to practise. apparently people were whispering about me being good (thanks to my informants for relaying this information to me it boosted my ego) but i was SO NERVOUS and i stumbled and yeah. could’ve been better but could’ve been a whole lot worse
lunch. do not remember what i ate. but 10/10 bc the weather was nice and i went out and played on a playground with my friends like little kids… we’re y13s we have to have our last remnants of fun before the joy gets sucked out of our bones
personal statement session. okay i’m with a friend, wrote more.
went out to local coffee shop with another friend after school and had an absolutely lovely chocolate milkshake. banging.

homework
maths mech stuff
more work on english presentation
english nea work
french reading
this is actually light for first week back omg?? i did some already ofc but like. IS y13 going to be that bad?
(watch me die inside later)

friday special: weekend plans
play tennis
grind out the maths past papers
do a bit of grinding on the personal statement
piano practiceee
at least one workout
make my chappell roan poster stick onto the wall solidly. i bought it from amazon on my dad’s account and for some reason they sent it inside the monthly dog chews order?? and i didn’t realise and nobody opened the parcel for a week because we had enough dog chews before. and the poster was wrapped round a stick (sorry for layman term i do not know the word for a poster stick) and now it keeps curling up and won’t stick to my wardrobe door properly. still elevates my room decor though

update saturday 7th september:

today was very unproductive. because of tiktok. i redownloaded it and spent nearly four hours on it. deleting it rn. why is it so addictive where else can i watch my frazzled englishwoman edits 💔

literally just did my maths homework (which was agonising… i used SIX sides of paper to write three tiny itsy bitsy questions because i kept crossing stuff out it needs redoing so the poor teacher can read it 😭), a bit of piano practice, and nothing else. i will do my french reading before bed though. that’s actually relaxing and will also make me sleep better.

plans for tomorrow: nea work!! and maths revision!! i have exactly three weeks starting tomorrow so i think ill do a “21 days of revising for my maths mock resit” thing. will aim to cover all topics and do hard exam questions from madasmaths.

if any fellow maths students read this far, do you have tips on revising for exam papers? what i’ve heard and experienced in my end of year 12 mock is that they’re just getting harder. i was getting (low) a grades in the timed papers i used to revise for the mock which made me really complacent and then the mock paper was like… five times harder. i can’t find anything like that revision-wise 💔 sure it’ll be fine though

low-key abandoned this but I want to restart it over half-term so hi everyone 👋 it has been HECTIC but I:

resat my maths Y12 exam and got an A!! big jump from a D am actually pleased w myself. v grateful to my friends for tutoring me

got predicted A*A*A in all. growing the grades WORKED guys!!

wrote my personal statement which was actually so nerve-wracking and I'm still worried about it. an original draft got approved by the head of sixth form, but I thought it was mid so I asked my English teacher and my friend and then rewrote it until 3am with my mum (love her so much for staying up with me I'm never complaining about anything she does ever again)

sent off my ucas. was asked to predict a grade for my piano diploma. predicted a distinction. i am not getting said distinction

applied to Oxford for French and English Lit. do not think I will get in. am acc quite sad abt that

have the MLAT on Tuesday and have done nowhere near enough revision. thank goodness it's half-term after one last day. it's just grammar right?? I can do it!!...

im so tired. need to take Friday evening off, sleep early, then Saturday Sunday Monday are going to be MLAT REVISION TIME. after that I will write a list of half-term priorities and update w progress. anyone please leave a motivating comment if you read this far I am losing the will to live 🙏 and any fellow language or English applicants say hiiii pls im the only person applying for either at my school and everyone is gaslighting me into thinking im insane for that 😥

Bonne chance! :france:
