not drinking at uni

i’m looking at going to winchester next year but i don’t drink alcohol and i don’t like partying/clubbing. i’m worried that i’ll be really lonely and isolated because it seems that those things are quite a big part of student life and everyone’s sort of expected to enjoy them. does anyone have any advice on how i can avoid feeling lonely at uni and also just how big the drinking culture is there? will i be able to find friends without the pressure of alcohol?

You will absolutely make friends who don’t drink. The SU serves non-alc drinks, too! I recommend going to freshers fayre and signing up for everything you can, then drop those things you lose interest in. Winchester has lots to do outside the pub/club

Hello 👋

Thank you for reaching out to us with some questions. Please rest assured that whilst drinking can be part of university social life, it’s not all there is to it! There are an increasing number of students who are cutting down their alcohol consumption, or who choose not to drink at all. We think its really important the university culture caters to all needs, and the Students’ Union offer a number of activities to get involved with.

We provide a variety of Activity Groups for students to get involved with, which serves as a way for students with mutual interests, hobbies, or skills to meet and socialise together. A full list of our current Activity Groups can be found on their website if you want to check it out: https://www.winchesterstudents.co.uk/activitygroups

The Union also put on a number of social events for students where drinking alcohol is not the focus such as weekly quiz nights, seasonal events (such as pumpkin carving), and crafting sessions. These happen throughout the year, including our Freshers Week. There are many students at Winchester who don't drink, and the Students’ Union caters to all preferences at our social events. Winchester also has lots of viewpoints, cafes, walks for students to meet up off-campus and partake in non-alcoholic activities.

We hope this has helped, but please feel free to look at our Winchester Student's Union website for a better idea of the activities our current students are enjoying! https://www.winchesterstudents.co.uk/

Thanks!
