having to re do a foundation year?

Hi all, my situation is that i had applied for an illustration course, but then was offered a foundation in art & design instead? I was in the middle of doing my art & design foundation course when i got offered that which led my teacher and i to be extremely confused. It turned out that i didn’t get in because my portfolio didn’t have enough “illustration points” even though on their portfolio guidelines it literally said to have a range of art and not to focus on one thing, my teacher also advised that as she is the one that helps art students build their portfolio for uni and has been through that process for years now. I’m now going onto doing the foundation course at the uni but i’m honestly just so confused and upset about the whole situation. No where on their website does it say that a foundation year is mandatory to progress onto the art courses and even so, i literally already did one? just not at their uni but i literally have the exact same qualification. Is this normal?

Hi @minionbob55

Just wondering if the university you are going to is in Scotland? As some of my friends who went there had to redo foundation as I think the system is slightly different there. Foundation is usually classed as first year and there are 4 years to the course.

If not than I am just as confused as you. I guess foundation is a good year so I hope you enjoy it, but I can see why your frustrated. At least this is an opportunity to continue working on your skills and grow your portfolio. It should also help you settle in to the university and become familiar with their teaching methods.
