Can I still Study animation At uni if I dropped A level art for English Combined?

Hi,

I’ve recently started my A-Levels doing photography, film studies and art however I’m considering dropping art as I’m already not so keen. If I dropped it for English would that really hurt my chances if I chose to go for animation at a university as drawing is really important, especially in the 2d space of animation?

I would continue my drawing and collage additional study however, which I think could help?
Hi @lukushopper,

Most art courses do understandably recommend students study art and design subjects at A-Level - however, since you study Photography, this should already meet this requirement. Nonetheless, if you do drop Art for English, it's definitely a good idea to keep up drawing/collage alongside your other subjects. Most animation courses will ask for a portfolio, and being able to show a good variety of themes and mediums will give universities a better idea of your creative thinking process.

Hope this helped,
Eve (Kingston Rep).
It would probably be best to check either through ucas or directly through the university website what entry requirements they have and if they specify any particular alevel. Personally, I am starting a graphic design degree but took alevel photography, psychology and maths.

So I genuinely don't think it should be any issue at all especially since youre already taking photography and film studies. Just be prepared because its more than likely that they will ask for a portfolio, I personally made mine using my photography work and just a couple of personal projects.

Honestly I think you'll be perfectly okay and should just go for English! It's gonna be a perfect break from the coursework heavy photography especially if you enjoy english!

Yeah good idea, I’ll definitely have a look at more Uni entry requirements when I get the chance. Also the fact that you are doing Graphics from Photography also gives me hope too!

I haven’t fully decided yet but Apart from English I’m also considering Sociology or even Philosophy, would you say that one of those would be a good idea too, as you did Psychology which is a Social Science? I’m just worried about how Unis would view one of these compared to English as my they might not be that well respected 🤷*♂️
I'd check the uni requirements but in most cases that I've applied to you don't need an art qualification as ling as you have examples of your work, if the uni offers it you could try do the foundation course first which will help you build a portfolio
