Diversity in universities

Hello

I'm planning to apply to Russell Group universities for LLB law course and wanted to ask how diverse York, Exeter, Southampton, and Liverpool are. As an Asian girl, I'd like to know if it's easy to find people from similar backgrounds. Could you share any experiences or knowledge you have about diversity at these universities?
Thanks.

hi, I'm beginning York for uni of first year in two weeks I'll let you know how it goes x but York is defo not diverse, so honestly if you regard diversity as fundamental I think that Liverpool is a better alternative, although there is a profound selection of societies to choose from.i think that Southampton is pretty good in terms of diversity too

Hi there!

It's understandable to be nervous when applying to university, especially when you're not sure if you'll find friends with similar backgrounds or if you'll fit in. Every university will have a range of students, so you'll always be able to find people with a similar culture, ethnicity or nationality. Try researching each university's international student statistics, along with their societies.

As for Southampton, we have 10,000 international students from 130 countries, with almost 40 cultural/international societies. Check out SUSU - Culture and International Societies - many of our societies will set up social events throughout the year and especially at Freshers, so you'll be able to find people who share a similar culture/background really easily, and also early on!

Southampton has a diverse population in general, so there's also plenty of Asian shops, restaurants, and other international food stores.

Don't hesitate if you have any more questions, and good luck with your university application!

Hi Anonymous,

In terms of the student community at Exeter, students come from a wide range of backgrounds creating a diverse and welcoming student community. We celebrate having students from different backgrounds and cultures, as it makes our learning environment exciting and diverse.

There’s also a dedicated channel to report behaviours such as harassment, bullying, intimidation, and discrimination, no matter how big or small, and every student has to take a Equality, Diversity & Inclusion training module when starting at the University to ensure that everyone feels welcome and included at our University and that all our students have a foundational understanding of these key issues. You can also have a look at this webpage if you’d like to learn more: http://www.exeter.ac.uk/speakout/

I hope that helps and let me know if you have any further questions.

I started York and have been here for about a bit over a week and I can tell you that the diversity here is a bit shocking. I feel like campus West is more diverse compared to East (I live on East) so maybe it’s different depending on your course and where you live but I have barely seen any

Hi there,

It's great to hear you're considering studying Law at York!

Something unique to the York Law School is our problem Based Learning (PBL) approach to teaching. If you want to know more about PBL, I'd recommend watching this video. We also have the Baroness Hale Legal Clinic which students can get involved in to give them real world experience working with 'live' clients directly on a range of topics.

In terms of diversity, 28% of our student population are international students and we have an array of international student societies where you can meet people who share your background. It sounds like you'd be interested in Asian cultural societies particularly, so I'd recommend checking out these:

But visiting our campus and city is probably the best way to get an idea of whether York is the right fit for you. You could book onto one of our guided campus tours, and while you're here, take a self-guided tour of the city of York using the Visit UoY app.

I hope this helps, best of luck in your applications! - Hannah 😄
