Commuting as a student nurse

Hi, I am hoping to do adult nursing next year, I am doing an access course this year. I am not able to move away and my closest uni is a 2 hour journey. Is it possible to complete a nursing degree while commuting?

Not 2 hours away. And you could easily end up with placements further away than that.

They will try and allocate you ones closest to home but it’s not guaranteed. And have you checked which hospitals your possible university places students at?

Bear in mind you will be doing nights and weekend shifts, how frequent and reliable are those trains? Will that train get you close to the hospitals you’ll be placed at.

It’s potentially doable but I don’t think anyone would recommend it. And you’d really need to look at how feasible it is before you sign up.

yeah ig uni isn’t an option for me then, I thought I had another year to plan things before starting the access course but only found out a week before it starting so I didnt have the time I thought I would to properly plan and research every part. I will do the access course for now and then hopefully in the future I will be able to go to uni.

There's supposed to be at least a maximum of 90 minutes travelling time to and from your place of living to your placement. You'll have to discuss with your university course leaders and also your university placement officer regarding your issues with travelling to any placement and then they will try to get you something closer but it all depends on where the placements are based.

Travelling two hours both ways to university is a bit too far as you are adding a minimum of 4 extra hours to your day each day you are in university. If you are happy to travel to and from university each day then do so, remember that you will usually have coursework outside of university to complete.

You'll have to think about how you will get to a hospital placement for a ( say ) 7am start time or perhaps Nightshift, what about weekends transport availability.

Is there no university closer to where you stay with nursing courses......

I qualified last summer as a adult nurse. My furthest placement was about two hours from my house by public transport (buses) due to the way the bus travels to that particular hospital, but was only around half hour by car.
Sometimes you are placed further away from your living accommodation which could mean it is hard for you to get to and from after finishing your shifts, so normally you are asked ( unfortunately) to find a local B&B and stay there overnight when doing your placement shifts and then put a form in for reimbursement of what it costs you - in my part of the UK ( my own country) we can get reimbursement of xxx amount per day when using a local B and B , maybe that is something you can ask SFE about. We are same with our travelling expenses as our bursary includes a daily allowance for travelling to and from placement only and anything we spend over the daily allowance we can claim it back.
