Does predicted grades make any difference?

I know there's GCSEs, Personal statement and maybe admission test + interviews for top universities. But is there a difference between being predicted A*A*AA and A*A*A*A* (and have met the entry requirement) in terms of being competitive for, let's say, Oxford, Imperial, UCL etc etc. Would admission tutors, in context of everything else (contextual information or whatnot), favour higher predicted grades. I have heard private schools are fond of giving A* like sweets so presumably, it must be an advantage?

Thanks
I think it depends on the university, some unis only check to see whether you meet the minimum entry requirements (Imperial does this, I think), and if they do that then lower predicted grades shouldn't matter. However, with unis that look at everything holistically (Oxford is one of these), higher predicted grades are probably advantageous (even if Oxford says they aren't)
