It can be useful, depending on the unis you end up applying to. I would look at finding some extra (but preferably super)curriculars to get you ready for medicine.

Forget extra circulars , do SUPER circulars

I think so. EPQs help with essay writing and presentation skills as you have to do these as you do the EPQ. I did an EPQ and it helped lower one of the grade requirements that I needed to get into uni. I heard that for medicine that some unis like Belfast lower the grade to being AAA and same with dentistry.

ohh okayy thank youu! how did you find it in terms of work load and time management and everythingg? do you think it got in the way of your actual a-levels? because im not tooo sure if i want to do it.. obviously if it gives me an advantage i would but then again a-levels are really importantt and i want to push myself to get all a* and im probably going to have to work quite hard because i only got a 7 in biology and chemistry for gcse :/

Hi. Sorry that I never actually responded. I got logged out of my Student Room account.

I mean I did a BTEC and 2 A levels and did the EPQ in Year 12 and it took a year to do. Some advice is even when it comes any school work, if it has a longer deadline, work on it a bit by bit so that eventually you can be able to build up your work and then allow you to feel less stressed. I did a project so I worked on the actual project during the summer holidays between y12-13. I know people that tried getting into their course and just missed getting into their uni by one grade cause they didn’t do an EPQ with no reduction. Imo the reduction of the grade helps because it helped me to get into university (even if I am doing music at a russel group uni).

If what you doing right now is too stressful then I would say just keeping trying hard to get your grades and I wish you the best in your A Levels.

Hope that helps

hi!

i hope you are doing well and are having a good weekend so far! i would definitely recommend completing an EPQ - it is quite time consuming but year 12 is defo the best time to do it in my opinion. it was compulsory at my school and i am very grateful and happy that i have done it now in the long run. it could be useful to do it on a topic that you are a) very interested in and b) partially links to your studies as you will already have some resources!

hope this helps:smile:)

I applied medicine and if u have good time management then Yh, if not then definitely no it’s waste of time. Only time u gon use it is in personal statement and interview but hospital volunteering is way more important than this. And no med school will consider epq as part of the assessment. Ur alevel predicted matters more, even uni like qmul said they use tariff points but epq isn’t part of it and only ur best 3 alevels r assessed. So rlly up to u, personally dont recommend especially if its in yr13 bc u will also have interviews and mocks.

I think that an epq isn't something that is needed, but if you did it on something related to medicine or dentistry (e.g. medical ethics) that could look very good to unis. An epq also gives you research, data gathering, and writing skills that could come in handy for uni.

Extra/supercurricular wise, I'd recommend volunteering for a hospital, care home, or if that's too difficult to arrange, then volunteering for a charity shop that's proceeds go to medical advancement (e.g. the British Heart Foundation).

You should really read into medicine and dentistry, or at least biology and chemistry topics that you don't cover in class.

Depending on your age, I think you should apply to this year's Young Science Writer of the Year Award, organised by the Association of British Science Writers. You can write your essay on any topic within science, including healthcare, and it would look really good on a medicine/dentistry uni application. I won the award last year for my essay "Are Insulin Pumps the Future of Type 1 Diabetes Management." and my essay was published by the BBC (as are the essays of all the winners).

Good luck!
