Buying Durham Fresher Wristband Or No

Heya, I am an international student who will be studying at Durham University starting this September, and staying over at St John's College.

St John's College offered me the option to purchase a £10 fresher wristband which will allow me entry to fresher events held outside of the college, such as bar nights and a boat party, which I'm assuming I can't enter without the wristband.

I am pretty afraid of getting drunk, so I won't be consuming any alcoholic beverages. If that's the case, should I not buy the wristband and not attend the bar nights? Or is it socially acceptable for me to attend the bar nights without consuming any alcohol because I would like to try to socialize with others.

Hiya,

It is completely acceptable for you to buy a wristband and attend with drinking, and there is no pressure for you to drink 🙂 I also bought the freshers band for the drinking events even though I didn't drink because I wanted to attend and hang out with everyone else so trust me, you won't be the only one. Also, some colleges do a 'drinking' wristband for club nights and any activity to do with drinking and a 'non drinking' wristband for activities that are not based around drinking, I'm not sure if St Johns does that but it may be useful to ask around and see what other sorts of non drinking activities they are putting on.

Hope this helps and best of luck!

Oh wow, it's great to hear this from someone who was in the same situation as me. I am now more comfortable getting the fresher wristband now.

Thanks for the advice!
