Appealing Out of Residence Help

(this was also posted on Uni Life topic before I found the DU one)

Quick background: I am on a year 'out of residence' because of health issues that meant that I had to take one exam in May 2024. Another issue cropped up and I had to then do this exam in August 2024.

I was informed by the Economics department that I am now on another year 'out of residence' because I apparently did not pass this exam (I do not have my results). I just received this information today and want to do everything in my power to combat this. It's a combination degree so I would even willingly modify or completely drop Economics from my degree stream if it means graduating this year (I would be entering final year).

Taking another year out would be devastating for many reasons, including financially (I have a scholarship), socially, and for my mental health. My mental health worsened over the gap year and I find that the regularity of university would help regulate my mental health. Additionally, this is my life on complete pause. I can't do another gap year, it was hell on earth.

I'm looking for any suggestions on how to handle this, and if anyone has had a similar experience and can tell me about it. Durham are quite strict but I need to fight it in way I've never fought before because I cannot afford this gap year at all.

Hi snowycrepe, sorry to hear about this - I'm wondering if you managed to get any advice or make any progress since last week? My daughter has a very similar situation to yours and only found out today. So far, we've not able to speak with anyone in the department to understand her options (and the notice she got was really blunt), so I'm curious to know if you managed to take this further and how you got on. I hope things are working out for you.

Hi, thank you for your well wishes, I hope it's also working out for your daughter. Is she also at Durham university? In that case, college is more receptive and tends to reply faster. It's very mentally draining to read all the guidelines and appeals processes completely alone, so definitely get in touch with the SU. My best bet was to ask all of my departments and my college can they think of any alternative solutions? In the meantime I have built up an appeal. Sadly, I don't have further updates yet.

Thank you. Yes, she's also at Durham. We have an initial but limited response from the department, nothing yet from her college, and will certainly contact SU for advice and support. Continuing to wish you best of luck getting sound advice and building up your appeal, I'll keep looking for updates and will also post as we make progress ourselves. Good luck and best wishes.

Thank you once more, and I would love to hear how your daughter gets on -- wishing her all the luck, and hopefully Durham will be kind to us both.
