Doctoral loan

Hi. I am currently just stated a pgce course that runs and funded form undergraduate maintenance loan.

I am currently wanting to do my business doctorate instead which I have been accepted into. As I can’t apply for doctoral loan while doing my pgce I’m going to withdraw from pgce to do my doctoral.

How am I best informing student finance of this so I can apply for doctoral loan

How long is the application for SFE funding for doctoral.

Also is it my pgce university that need to inform student finance yourselves or can I do this.

Hi there. Do you have an approved application for the PGCE? When does the course start, have you had any payments yet? Thanks. David

Started this week and received my first payment. I know when I withdraw this will leave overpayment which I will contact and set up payment plan.

But soon after withdrawing can I apply for doctoral loan.

And how do I notify sfe about this is it from the university saying I’ve withdrew or would my saying be enough
Hi Obor0502,

Your university will need to inform us that you have withdrawn from the PGCE. You can apply for a doctoral loan, which is a contribution loan of up to a maximum of £29,390 for new postgraduate students starting their postgraduate Doctoral course in 2024/25 AY. There will be a yearly cap on funding, the maximum the student can be paid each AY is £12,471.

Thanks,
Calum

Hi does the yearly cap take into consideration for both undergraduate maintenance loan and doctoral loan or is that just for the doctoral loan it’s self. So for example if it’s a 4 year doctorate it would work out at something like 7k per year split into 3 instalments per one.
Hi Obor0502,

It's just for the doctoral loan itself, so your maximum entitlement can be £29,390 for the length of the course, with a maximum of £12,471 per year.

Calum

Hi also how long is the process for when the university inform you to withdraw course from my account. Also. How long is doctoral loan application process if done online.
Hi Obor0502,

Once the university inform us your withdrawal this will take around 32 working days to process based on current timescales. Then once you submit your Doctoral Loan application it will be around 6-8 weeks to process.

Thanks,
Calum

it it really that long to process a withdrawal if the university contact to say I have withdrawn surely it’s just a click of a button to update my student finance account.
Hi there,

Unfortunately that is the current timescale for us to process a withdrawal and you will need to allow more time for it to be processed.

Thanks, Drew
