Pharmacy at Strathclyde?

Hello. Is anyone currently doing pharmacy at Strathclyde University? A have a few questions as I would like to do MPharm. I didn’t meet the grade requirements My grades are pretty average. so I am doing a course in college before I apply.

I just a few questions on pharmacy. Is it I guess enjoyable? What are the people like? Are they insanely clever or? How are the tests and exams? Do people drop out? Due to how hard it is. Is there presentations? If so, do you do them in front of loads of people in a lecture room?

So yeah these are just some questions I have. Thank you! You can use this as a venting form if u want 😭
Hi! I’m currently studying 1st year pharmacy, I’ll do my best to answer your questions!

The course is really interesting with lots of information to absorb, some bits I find really enjoyable, others I struggle with but overall a great course.

Honestly just find people who are similar to you. Friend groups were made quickly but everyone is in the same boat on freshers week! It can get quite ‘cliquey’ quite quickly but they will mix groups regularly to help you meet others! Kind of hard to tell if people are clever. It’s not really like school - there are 170 of us so hard to know who’s clever. But you have to really put in work and it’s unlikely you will get results close to what you may have got in school. Studying is different, lectures are different than being taught in school but hopefully college will introduce you to that!

In first year, 4 modules - 4 class tests (20%) - 4 exams (80%) - all exams on computers in the university, closed book. 2 are before Christmas and 2 are after - all multi choice in first year with slightly different questions types each time. 5th module has a few lab reports, a numeracy assessment, an OSCE, Placement in the new year.

Haven’t noticed anyone dropping out yet but it is a big group and we aren’t that far into the year yet! Be aware, people are more likely to be kicked out from failing exams too much as opposed to dropping out. You only get limited resits - especially the numeracy exam!

There have been 2 GROUP presentations so far. They haven’t counted towards anything, just been put in random groups to meet other people. You present in a kind of classroom almost, in front of about 80 people but they are all in the same boat - I promise it’s not that scary!

Good luck! Feel free to ask any more questions you think of and I’ll do my best to answer them for you 😄

I totally get where you are coming from. I feel like exam results aren’t everything - of course it’s what the uni uses to judge your understanding of science but if you can ensure you are confident with the stuff now, then it will help you. There aren’t huge amounts of chemistry (that we’ve covered) but I’d say that the biology is pretty useful. It’s quite hard to judge as I can’t really separate the higher course from the Advanced higher course very easily in my head - they’ve kinda all just merged into one if u get me.

In 1st year pass marks for the module assessments are 40% (all multi choice) and the numeracy exam is 70%.

I believe in final year pass marks are 50% for module exams (no multi choice) and numeracy is upped to 90% which is the highest pass mark I know of. Not sure how accurate this is but it’s what the older students in my PDA group were saying!

Christmas exams are 2nd/3rd week in December - just studying now lol.

I really wouldn’t panic - just study hard and you will be fine. At least that’s what I’m telling myself!!
