Pressure

I’ve just moved to a new school and everything feels so overwhelming.

It’s not my first time switching schools, but this time everything is different:
- learning style from physical writing to using computers + complex sites
- new environment + people (in which I need to rebuild relationships)
- the students there are really academic (as in the whole year of people who’d receive straight 8s and 9s during GCSEs)
- method of travel - I used to go to a boarding school, so everything was more comfortable and convenient. Now, I’ve swapped for a new day school and I need to travel 1 hr every day

I don’t know what to do anymore, I’ve talked with my parents but nothing helps; moreover, trying a better mindset still makes me feel even worse!

I no longer like to go to school or enjoyed it like I did in my past school. Unfortunately resulting with constant silent crying sessions and headaches everyday.

Anyone have any advice on how to feel happier?

Don't panic or worry, I've got ASC and ADHD so everyday can feel overwhelming for me. I had to leave school do to being horribly overwhelmed.

1.

You'll get better at using computers the more you use them, so don't worry. If you are consistently having trouble with it, try to copy a page from a book onto a document, this'll improve your typing speed and accuracy.

2.

This'll get easier overtime, try to go on walks and explore a bit, this'll improve your confidence, not instantly though. Talk to people if you can and join a club, I know it is scary, but you won't regret it!

3.

People are just good a regergitation. I'm awful at it, as are many students. So don't lose confidence because your grades aren't theirs. Some people have academic peakes in secondary school. I know people who got Ds and went on to get their highest scores in their degree at uni!

4.

Travel sucks, I hate it. It is just one of those things we just have to put up with. Bring something along with you to make it easier, like a phone or a fidget tool. It'll get easier after consistency.

Big changes in life are never easy. It will suck and continue to suck for a while. But tunnels don't become publicly available until their finished, and everyone will go through that dark tunnel and eventually reach the light, and there will be many, many roadworks ahead. The work you do will pay off. Never lose confidence, you can do this! Creating a better mindset is one of the hardest things to do so if you struggle and end up feeling worse, that is normal, most people will try to do this. You attempting to do create a new mindset shows maturity that I bet not many of the straight 8 and 9 acheiving student will have! I hated school, I had an awful time everyday, but I made it out, even though that seemed impossible. Crying from the stress is super normal and it can help vent that emotion.

Find someone to talk to and when you are confotable, open up about the difficulties you are facing. Everything you feel and say is valid! Find something to immerse yourself in during your down time, whether that be a flight simulator, walks, dancing, video game, whatever, just have some fun! I hope this helps, and remember, you are never alone with these issues, many people have difficulties, even though when you look around and see everyone thrive, there is always another person looking around.

Changing schools can be a really difficult time, even if you have changed schools before. You've been really brave to post on here and be so open about how things are feeling. You shared that you no longer enjoy school and are constantly silently crying and getting headaches which is so tough. Please know if you are ever having suicidal thoughts, you can reach out to us on HOPELINE247 over call 0800 068 4141, text 88247, email [email protected] and webchat on our website https://www.papyrus-uk.org/

Thanks, truly thank you for the response.

I’ve joined around 3 clubs/societies like you’ve recommended and took some walks around the school today.
What I have realised is that I should keep going - since surviving is the way of winning; Moreover, I should not let stress get to me as it is fairly normal in some cases.

I hope everything goes well, for you as well.

Thanks. :h:
