How was your first year as a student nurse?

Hi, I am starting nursing this month!

I would like to know how your experience was like as a first year student nurse. Such as, placement, how did you balance work and being a student nurse and anything else that could be relevant!

Congratulations on getting a chance to become a nurse.

Hope you are looking forward to starting your student nurse degree soon and look forward to some hard work over the next 3 years but it's worth it when you finally qualify.

I qualified last summer as a adult nurse.
When I did my first placement I think I was a tiny bit nervous because you don't know what to expect and what the staff are going to be like.

To be honest I had nothing to worry about that as the staff made me welcome 🤗 🤗 and they were absolutely amazing throughout the whole placement.

I actually worked part-time before I started my nursing degree so it was not a problem balancing it when I started my nursing placement as I was able to reschedule my contractual hours and days to suit me for when I had days of from nursing placement, it didn't affect me during university studies weeks.

Prior to doing my nursing degree I was actually a student veterinary nurse and I completed my veterinary nursing degree in the June and then I started my nursing degree in the September as I always wanted to be a nurse.

I have just completed my first full year as a qualified adult nurse and I love it.

Good luck with your own nursing degree

I qualified in 2019 and my first year - actually, all 3 years - really weren't that bad for balancing placement, studies, life and everything else.

I'd say that being organised is the key for any degree. I'd set aside time to do reading and time for writing essays. I find that public transport journeys are great for getting reading done! Starting work on am assignment when you get the assignment title/brief/due date (usually at the start of a module), even if it's just bits of reading, can really help - especially if a module starts in October, you start placement at the end of November, and the 4000 word essay is due in the beginning of January (and that happened to my cohort!)

I worked part time all the way through my nursing degree, but did less while on placement. I worked as a HCA on nurse bank at my local hospital (where at lot of my placements were) so could pick up shifts depending on what I was able to do.

Try to be kind to yourself. Student nurses tend to get really worked up and panicky about not knowing things and thinking they should know stuff - even registered nurses don't know everything, even if they know loads about the speciality they work in.

Find a hobby, join a club/society, and don't hide away behind the excuse of "I'm a nursing student I don't have time". It'll help your social life so much.
I've played in brass bands for 21 years and did so all through my nursing degree and since. I do miss some things due to work but am still actively involved. I've mentored students who have played for the university netball and ladies' rugby teams with the same issue but still able to be very much involved.
