Warwick Accommodation Move in Slot

My son is due to move into campus accommodation as a fresher.
We are becoming increasingly frustrated with the accommodation office being unable to advise of a move in time or even day.
This is at odds with any other experience of university that we, as a family, have ever had, and is very different from any of his friends’ arrangements elsewhere.
It seems very late to be notified by email “some time after the 16th” to then scramble to book a slot which could be anything from three to five days later.
Some families will be travelling significant distances and will need to book accommodation, possibly leave from work.In our case I need to book flights to try to get to a work conference which are going up in price daily.
It all seems a bit shambolic , not to mention discourteous. Have tried appealing to the accommodation office but they either genuinely don’t have a clue or don’t care.
They must have their reasons.

Yes, we are in the same situation. First impressions of an organisation are so important. Such a shame that they don't seem to understand that which would be obvious to most people.

That principle works both ways.

I’m curious about what you mean by this?
I can’t think of any other situation where one might be required to move to the other end of the country without a clear understanding of when.
Do you have inside info?
( affected by this situation)

It is bizarre to assign accommodation and not provide a date by this late stage. I agree, this is inconvenient and inconsiderate. We need to plan booking transport, organise work and cover for caring responsibilities.
Very frustrating.
I’ve no inside information. I imagine they have their reasons for dates and time slots not yet being allocated.
i should add that from the same position, fresher waiting for a move in time and date, I’m assuming it could be anytime on Saturday or Sunday and just working around that.

Why do you even reply? It doesn’t add anything to the conversation.

Ok.
You will be able to book a slot anytime between Thursday 19th - Sunday 22nd September 2024. As it says on the first website you see when you google it. There are many slots and you will get whatever date and time you want, its not allocated. I don't understand people deciding to complain on forums about something they don't know, rather than just taking the 2 minutes to google it. Once allocated an accom, you just do your induction and book a slot, theres no big rush or fight. Stop complaining.

warwick accom are notoriously slow at sorting out accommodation. I joined last year and I think they opened induction/check in on the 11th (so should actually be today for this year). they also don’t like to tell you your block and room number until you move in on the day, but you should be able to check it on eVision (if i remember correctly) a week or so before move ins (so this weekend)

Unfortunately, the issue is with the casual "you just do your induction and book a slot" phrase you've used. Accommodation induction is not currently available, and it is only after having completed accommodation induction that students can book their move-in slots.

Now, you may well be right, and there may well be so many slots available that everybody can move in when they want. However, I assume that those who are planning to move-in over the weekend (to avoid parents having to book time off work) are concerned that everyone else might be trying to do the same thing. So there's a non-zero chance that some students who wanted to move-in over the weekend will be forced to move-in on Thursday or Friday instead (due to an unavailability of slots). Those students may then have to ask their parents to book a day of work at short notice, or may need to make separate travel arrangements.

Not what we have been told by the office, but thank you for the reply.
At the risk of annoying Uni staff (and possibly some parents) we sort of ignored the process because it was so opaque (not at Warwick mind)

We knew roughly when my daughter was moving in (ie the expected weekend), booked our own accommodation around that and turned up on campus 9am Saturday. The staff weren't ready but were still brilliant. We had unloaded and gone for a drink by 10:30 before the real melee had even started
