The final countdown! A year 13 who just wants to be a poet

Hi, my name is Hannah and I started a GYG blog a while ago but promptly forgot about it.

I really want to study English literature with creative writing at UEA, however I now have the large task on my hands of improving my A*BC predicted grades to try to make the AAA entry requirements.

This blog will share my journey through year 13 as I attempt to battle through personal statements, UCAS forms, predicted grade exam resits, various other mock exams and other delights of year 13.

My current predicted grades are as follows:
English Literature - A*
Philosophy - B
Economics - A
AFA Creative writing qualification (not an A-level) - A

If you want to hang around and see if I make it, feel free to follow my progress here. If I am not insane by the end of the year then I will share if I succeeded in my goal or not.

Have a great day

- Hannah

My economics resit, the last chance to secure a decent grade to help me to get into my dream university, went absolutely terribly! For once, the issue wasn't my fault. I had revised A LOT, and had done so many practice papers, and I was very nervous, yet confident that I would manage to get a better mark than I had done in May.

Upon sitting down to do the paper, I discovered that, for some unknown issue, printing error perhaps, only about a quarter of the paper was there! I told the invigilator, answered the questions that were on the paper, and that was it. I don't yet know if I have to resit again (this would be the third time) or if they are going to base the grade off what I could answer.

Today's task is revising for my philosophy resit that I have next week, hopefully my luck with exams is going to get slightly better.

I am going to give share my song of the day everyday if I remember, that will reflect my mood with everything that is going on.
Today's song is Sloop John B by the Beach Boys, because I would rather just go home and sleep than deal with these exams.

It's so unfair on you that the whole paper wasn't there! My school made plenty of blunders with resit papers too which is so frustrating. Good luck for your philosophy resit!

Once again, I forgot this existed so a quick update:
I submitted my UCAS form on Thursday! In the resit of the failed econ resit, I (somehow) managed to get an A, which will hopefully make my life a lot easier as most of the places that I applied for want 3 As.

I have applied for English with/and creative writing at:
UEA
Lancaster
Warwick
Kent
Birmingham

Hey, good luck on your results and application to UCAS! Do you have any personal statement tips for people applying for English lit and creative writing? I feel like I should be great at writing it, and people have told me as I'm studying English, but I'm so overwhelmed with it. If you don't, no worries though

I'm not sure if I have any tips to be honest, I'd say just don't overthink it and try to write it quite naturally as I feel as though when I did this mine flowed a lot better and showed why I love the subject, whereas when I was overthinking how to write it mine just didn't sound great.

I'm sorry that is really not much help at all, but I'm really bad at giving advice. Is there an English teacher at your school/college that could have a look at it as well? I got my teacher to look at it and the advice he gave was really helpful, and he also helped me to shorten mine as it was too long.

Hi @superstarw

Writing a personal statement can definitely feel overwhelming, but you’re already on the right track by thinking deeply about it ! The key is to structure your statement in a way that flows logically and reflects any passions or experiences.

I would start by answering these questions: Why you want to study English? Is there a specific author or book you really enjoy ? Or any topics you haven’t enjoyed whilst studying your A Levels?

Then I would include any relevant work experience or extracurricular activities that you have done. This would be a great opportunity to discuss what skills you have gained and why they are helpful for university life/ for your chosen course.

For your final paragraph make sure to link it all together. The key is to make sure your personality and enthusiasm comes through. Try to keep the focus on the knowledge and experiences you have gained, while expressing the key reason for wanting to study English Literature and Creative writing!

Hope that helps! Gook Luck!

Another update, two weeks after I submitted my UCAS application I received all five offers! Thankfully, my top choice UEA ended up making me an ABB offer instead of the AAA, so I am slightly less stressed now. Tasks for this half term are to:

Make revision resources for all philosophy topics as I neglected this to focus on the economics nightmare that my school caused

Try to book onto offer holder days so that I can see the universities in more detail

Keep on top of the economics

Start writing the dreaded English lit NEA!!!

Revise for my January mocks

Sort out my creative writing portfolio

As much as this looks like a daunting list, for the first time in a while I am in good spirits about where I am with my progress. ABB is much more achievable than the AAA that I was striving to get before, and for once the amount of work in front of me seems fairly manageable.

I hope everyone reading this is doing well and is not too stressed by UCAS. Once it is sent it really is like a weight is lifted off your shoulders ❤️

Hi @YoungPoet

Congratulations on your offer! Try not to stress too much, I’m sure everything will work itself out. Keep revising and just do your best in your exams. 😊

Any questions do feel free to ask! We also have an open day coming up soon, on the 23rd November! Do come along if you can.
