What happens if i drop out of Uni before I start?

So my situation is I'm about a week and a half away from going to university and moving into the university housing I've arranged, but I was wondering what would happen if i withdrew from the course and didn't go? Like would I still have to pay for rent or anything like that as I'm withdrawing at short notice? Or if I wanted to drop out would it just be a matter of contacting the university and telling them so?

I do still really want to go to university by at least next year, but at the moment I'm just not feeling as though it's possible to go this year. I know it might seem like a stupid reason to a lot of people, but i recently had a tooth removed and it got infected, which set my healing back by a week. and now i'm just kind of scared it's getting infected again (i've got an appointment with my dentist in a few days) and I just don't feel like I can manage moving miles away from home and doing everything that's related to university after having to have another infection fixed (and effectively restarting the healing process all over again) if it is the case that i do need them to fix anything.

You need to read through your accommodation contract to see what the penalties/liabilities are if you don't take your place. If you've paid a deposit, it's not likely to be returnable and you could be liable for the whole year's accommodation fees unless you find someone to replace you. However, if it is a city where student accomm is in short supply, the uni may have a waiting list of other students who could replace you.

Ask your uni if you can defer your place to next year if you think you would still like to go there next year.

I would wait and see what the outcome of the dental appointment is in the first instance. Otherwise I second the above advice

That said you may also want to think a bit about what you're going to do for the rest of the year after your tooth infection gets sorted in the next few weeks if you do end up taking a year out one way or another!
