I've been passionate about understanding how things work, especially in tech, since I was around 10. A year later, I dove into programming, convinced that computer science was my path. However, when one of my mom’s friends mentioned that everyone was pursuing that route, my parents weren’t supportive, leading me to reconsider my options.
As I explored other interests, I found myself drawn to drawing and had a genuine love for math, the only subject that truly resonated with me from primary school. Architecture seemed like the perfect blend of my interests, and I decided to pursue it. My dad supported this choice, but my mom was skeptical, believing it to be a man’s job and suggesting I pursue medicine instead.
Now, as a Year 11 student, I’ve been researching entry requirements for universities and planning my path. But just three weeks ago, I learned that my parents’ support for architecture was not as steadfast as I’d believed. They’ve expressed concerns about the job’s demands, gender roles, and the challenges of balancing work and family life. They now believe a career in medicine would be more beneficial for me.
Personally, I’m not inclined towards medicine due to my difficulties with communication, ADHD, and dyslexia. Science isn’t my forte, and while I’d consider a role in pharmacy if necessary, it’s not my passion. I’m torn between pursuing architecture and computer science online to get qualifications in both, or following my parents’ wishes and focusing on medicine.
Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading!
