Becoming an ibms member

Hello,
I am going to study biomedical sciences at the university of Surrey and on the biosciences and medicine preparation page I saw that they recommend that people doing bsci biomedical sciences to become a member.

Is this possible for someone who hasn’t even started the course yet?

I can't think of a good reason to become a member until the final year of your degree. Unless you have a lot of spare finance.

Hi there!

Becoming involved with IBMS during your course can benefit you in the form of careers events, access to publications, support services, newsletters, etc. All of this can help to enhance your CV from day one at Surrey.

You can also chat to our students and ask what their experience has been.

Hope this helps!

You can become involved with the professions activities without being required to pay a professional body membership! Just paying for membership won't enhance your CV at all. Please don't make students think they need to spend £150 on something that won't help their employment chances.

Hi @Mila68394,

Sending you a warm welcome to Surrey’s Biomedical Science Course (from a fellow student of the same degree!).

Just to add to the conversation, I definitely recommend becoming an IBMS member as it shows your dedication towards the subject (and profession). Especially, if you’ve been a member for a long time. You’ll also be eligible for the President's Prize in final year if you’re a member.

It makes you stand out from those who haven’t, when applying to placements or relevant jobs (whilst also making your CV look good too). I’m an IBMS eStudent member as well and I find the content they provide within the membership helpful and interesting. It also makes me keep up-to-date with the latest news, which I enjoy learning about. Some useful content doesn’t require the membership since they’re uploaded to places like YouTube. However, things like the specific scientific journals and publications require membership access. You can learn more about the benefits here.

You’ll probably start the course soon anyways, so I’d just recommend applying for it then. I think the added bonus of being a student is that most memberships for professional societies are very cheap (or even free!). They sometimes have a 1 year plan or a 3 year offer deal. You can even get a discount to the membership fees if you know where to look (hint hint).

Even if you only study Biomedical Science, don’t restrict yourself only to the IBMS Membership. There are many societies out there like the Royal Society of Biology, Microbiology Society, Biochemical Society, the British Pharmacological Society, The Physiological Society, Genetics Society and the British Society of Immunology to name a few.

I’m not saying you should join all of them but feel free to explore the topics that most interest you a little further and see what they have to offer. Some of them provide Summer Internship Schemes (applications usually starts around early winter/spring period time).

I hope that helps!

Kind Regards,
Britina
