A level Sociology

Anyone who is doing/done a level sociology what is it like? Is the course enjoyable and do you recommend taking it?

I’ve just started year 12 and i’m doing psychology, history and dance but i’m debating on whether to change dance to sociology. Would it be a good combination ?

@always-anxious. I've just started Sociology but you've just started Yr13 so would be more helpful.

Hello, I'm in year 13 and I study Sociology.

I enjoy sociology as it's interesting and can be applied to to the real world. There is quite a lot of writing so if you're okay with that then I do recommend the subject. I study psychology as well and I find psych and socio go well together as some the topics overlap (Eg research methods) but is approached in a different way, which is interesting as the same topics are viewed from different perspectives.

If you have any other questions, then I'll be happy to answer the best I can :-)

howdy!

i did sociology at GCSE & am doing it at A-level. personally, i absolutely love it. i'm doing ancient history & classical civilisation along with sociology & they really do go along together quite nicely. psych, socio & history sound like a grand combination if you're happy with the work you'll need to do for each; they'll really feed quite nicely into each other & they're good synoptic topics together. sometimes in classics or history i'll be able to make a sociological connection to a topic we're studying, or vice versa for each.

tldr: i love sociology. i love history. if you're down for the work & hair-pulling, go for it. nothing stopping ya. if you're still unsure have a chat to your lecturers about the course to see if it suits ya fancy!

I do A-level Sociology, just started year 13
I love Sociology it's such an interesting subject and if you have good teachers then it's a really dynamic class too- there's always debates and discussions and they always try to relate it to current or recent examples too. Of course there are some boring bits as there are with any subject but I would really recommend it. I also do History and it goes really well with that too-- I've been sat in history lessons and we've learnt about similar things or even looked at the same studies (Edexcel history)

I’m aware that psychology and sociology are content heavy subjects so I was just wondering if it’s manageable revision wise ? With history too I’m afraid it will be too much to handle 😅 What other subject/s do you take?

That’s really interesting that there’s a crossover between history and sociology. My exam boards for both subjects are aqa so i’m not sure if i’ll have the same crossover but it would be cool. How do you find revising for them both, is it manageable?
Both are so content heavy so I’m still unsure about taking sociology, especially with another essay based and content heavy subject (psych) but i think i’ve decided that i will change over to it next week. What’s your other subject/s?

No worries! Yes, they're both content heavy subjects but if you keep on top of the work then it's manageable. I do biology as well which is also content heavy.

I recommend making revision resources after each lesson you have to ensure you're keeping on top of work, as well as making sure you're doing regular active recall to ensure you remember the content :-)

Hi there :wavey:

I did Sociology, History and Art at A-level and I'm now in my second year of studying Sociology with Social Policy at the University of Sheffield.
I think history and sociology particularly go well together as history gives context to sociological problems. In my sociology modules various historic events were mentioned (e.g. holocaust, industrialisation, introduction of women's rights, WW2, the Cold War and many more). Nearly all current sociological problems have been impacted by the historical context in some way. Sociology gives a more modern practical application to history, which I've found really interesting.

Hope this helps and let me know if you have anymore questions!

Trudie
