I can't pick a 5th Uni choice for history - URGENT

Hi,
I need to have chosen my 5th uni choice by this Wednesday (internal early applicant deadline) and just can't for the life of me muster one:
I am applying for History (predicted A*A*A*) at...

Oxford - AAA
UCL - AAA
Durham - A*AA
Bristol - ABB (Contextual) - Would be my insurance if I got into any of the above!

(I also have circumstances to explain a mediocre GCSE performance as well as being classed as 'care experienced' by UCAS.)

I am looking for another option but don't know where to choose. If anyone has any recommendations, I would be really interested to hear them with some advice regarding how aspirational / likely it would be that I'd get into any of these universities.
Any advice is welcomed
Thanks :-)

No you don't have to choose a 5th uni by Wednesday. You can apply initially with just 4 (or fewer if you want) and then add the 5th later.

Your school might tell you that this isn't allowed but they are wrong. It is an extremely useful tactic.
It might also be helpful for people to make suggestions to have an idea of what periods/regions/themes/approaches in history you're interested in

You can consider Southampton, Bath, Surrey, Manchester or Sussex Uni.

I listed 5 options. What about Surrey, Southampton or Sussex? Have you considered York, Lancaster, Leeds. Cardiff, Swansea, Liverpool Uni, Birmingham Uni or Nottingham Uni.
If your school are applying undue pressure to pick a fifth choice, I'd agre with the advice above to leave that choice blank and just ensure that you use it by Jan 31st. You can use the extra time to do more research and in a best case scenario you'll have a reply from one of your other choices and will then know how risky or safe the last option needs to be.

Leeds & Notts were on my mind… the others I’ve visited, researched and / or are not an interesting course / a city or location desirable to me

I may do this.

Thankyou!

If you're interested in medieval York is worth considering  Perhaps also St Andrews? Warwick also has some strengths in ancient history but not sure how they fare for the other areas (I think they are pretty good for Renaissance art history but that's kind of a parallel area).

If you're interested in any non-European stuff then SOAS could be worth looking into. I've heard Edinburgh also has very good Asian history offerings.

Note at Oxford you only do ancient if doing ancient & modern history (whereas at Cambridge you cover the range in the standard history course). You probably know this but something to consider if not!

Hi,

Thanks for your detailed response: I visited York and really didn’t like it unfortunately.

I would be very interested in St Andrews, would it not be too aspirational along with my other choices or would you say it’s not too bad?

I don't think it's unreasonable as a) you have a solid "backup" with your Bristol contextual option and b) history tends to be somewhat undersubscribed anyway across the board so that's not as much of a worry for your subject area as for some others

Okay great, I’ll make it St Andrews then!

Thankyou so much!

Hi @Eg3756
Lancaster is also a collegiate university like Oxford and Durham and is a campus based university located in the Northwest. The history course at Lancaster has great freedom of choice for your modules allowing you to study topics that interest you the most. There's also a range of courses that allow you to study another subject alongside history as a major-minor subject or a joint honors degree, which are listed here Undergraduate - Lancaster University or there are options to take a study aboard or placement year. I've also linked the course page for history so you can explore the module options to see if these interest you History BA Hons (V100) - Lancaster University.
If you have questions, feel free to ask!
