What to bring to uni on the first day?

Hi, so I’m going to be starting uni next week. (Well that’s induction week, lessons commence on the 23rd) I wanted to ask what do I bring? For context I will be studying diagnostic Radiography and will be living at home.

Hi there,

That's so exciting that you're starting university! You should be sent an email with things that you will need. I just had a laptop, notebook and pen - you should be informed if you need more.

All the best,

Hi @CardiffUni Rep yes it definitely is exciting though a bit scary lol. No my uni hasn’t sent any information about what to bring? Most likely scenario I will be taking the same things as you anyways. Thank you for your advice I really appreciate it 🤩✨
A very large tin of biscuits. It will help break the ice in your accommodation and make you exceedingly popular! 😁

Haha that would be nice but I’m not staying at the halls but potentially I could dish them out prior to lessons😆

Lovely ideas @Cardiff Uni Rep & @ageshallnot ! I did the exact same with a box of home made brownies. One way you could do it is to yes, bring them out before a lecture, offer them to the people around you in the lecture (if biscuits are allowed indoors!) or go to a freshers' event like a society taster and bring them out there. A definite good ice breaker.

I'd also recommend bringing a pack of cards for impromptu games tournaments, an online and/or paper academic diary, and something to carry with you that has a story behind it - a piece of jewellery or keyring perhaps. For example, I wore a denim jacket which was over 30 years old to my first lecture so when someone asked me where I got it, I could say '1982'. The conversation went on from there and before I knew it I got to know a new coursemate. But besides that, a laptop, notebook and a few pens is a great place to start!

Good luck and enjoy freshers!

Hi

Congratulations on getting into your chosen uni!

I would just take either a laptop or a notepad and pen depends what works best for you!

I hope this helps,

Hey there,

Congratulations on starting your university journey so soon! 🎉

For your first day, I would recommend you to carry basics like your laptop/Ipad, a notepad, a few pens, student ID card, a water bottle and powerbank. Also, I highly recommend to carry a few snacks as they can come in very handy!

Also, please check and carry any course specific items that your university has informed you about.

Some general tips that really helped me during my first week -

Attend on the on-campus events and talk to different students clubs and societies

Try to get there early and explore the campus

Be open to meeting new people and initiating conversations

Remember to take care of yourself and take rest

I hope this helps!

Just try not to put too much pressure on yourself. Defo take every opportunity you feel able to, put yourself out there and chat to people, but please don't feel like everything has to be perfect. Its normal to feel a bit confused, overwhelmed and anxious in the first couple of weeks. Don't be afraid to take yourself away for a bit of alone time if you need a break from the madness, and give yourself plenty of time to get used to it all. I'm confident if you take the tips on here and look after your own wellbeing too then you'll have a fab time at uni. Very best of luck!
