Best University option for Law (LLB) with A*A*B and all GCSE 9

Dear All,

I was accepted into LSE for the LLB program, but unfortunately, I lost my place due to my A-level results, where I achieved A*A*B. The B came as a result of an unexpectedly lower score in one of my English Literature papers, which significantly impacted my overall grade. I had anticipated achieving A*A*A* based on my performance and preparation, so this outcome was quite a shock. I had no plan B.

Currently, I'm taking a gap year and exploring my options for applying to universities next year with these grades. I had achieved all 9s in my GCSEs.

I would greatly appreciate any advice or guidance from those who have faced similar situations, particularly regarding the best universities I could consider applying to with my current results. I am open to resit my English literature paper if this will help me to get into good uni.

Thank you in advance for your support and insights.

Best regards,
Sanjay
I assume that "no Plan B" meant that you had no insurance choice. Did you look at places available through clearing?

York, RHUL, Reading, and Kent, might be among the options, although you'd have to check with each university its grade requirements. These may change from year to year.

If you are taking a gap year and applying for university entry in 2025 anyway, you might as well have a go at a resit and apply to universities which ask for AAA or higher, unless you plan to obtain employment or go travelling for the whole of the time between now and next summer.

Whatever you do, this time have a Plan B. Good luck.

Hi,
Thanks for your response.

I was not able to secure a good university through clearing, so I decided to take a gap year, gain some work experience, and see what the best option is for me next year.

1.

What is the best option available for me with current grade ( A level- A*A*B and 9s in all GCSE papers)?

2.

What is the best option available if resit my English paper and at least get grade A? I think, not all Unis take resit.

Is Clearing still open? The choice of university that you attend is much less important than you might think if you plan on being a solicitor. Your A level grades are sufficient to be considered by nearly every law firm so long as you have good degree results and a compelling CV. I work for a major international law firm and we hire from non-RG universities every year.
Alternatively, join what you consider to be a “good” university to study another subject (eg. History) and do a conversion course afterwards.

Thanks Katana for your response.
I am not keen to study any other subject for my degree. I am okay to take a gap year, I am working as a intern at a solicitor firm so hopefully gap year experience will add value to my CV, at the same time I can explore what is the best Uni I can get into next year. Your words have truly helped ease my disappointment about not getting into LSE ."

Consider applying in phases, particularly if you're not resitting. Start with perhaps 3 around the A*AA/AAA level. If you get acceptances, that's good. If you get rejections then you can adjust your remaining choices accordingly.
